Jerry Scales, 47, fan of David Letterman
Most people knew of Jerry W. Scales through his unique relationship with the David Letterman Show.
The Covington resident, who died Tuesday at 47, was an avid fan of the late-night show and in March of 1996, he started dropping Letterman letters for his "mailbag" feature.
"I have this constant ringing in my ears. What causes this? I'm losing sleep, " read one letter. Another asked Letterman how Mr. Scales could ask his boss for a raise.
Letterman would read the letters on the show, and in answering them, use them as a springboard for some sight gag or skit.
Fans from as far away as Canada called Mr. Scales after his letters were aired, just to see if he was real.
Mr. Scales visited the show on his 40th birthday -- Feb. 20, 1997 -- and met Letterman, who gave him an autographed football and several signed pictures of his crew.
Mr. Scales had hoped to persuade Letterman to recognize Covington as the home office of the show, an honor that then belonged to Wahoo, Neb. He took with him a Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce videotape listing 10 reasons why a business ought to locate in Covington.
Mr. Scales decorated his recreation room with framed copies of the letters that Letterman read on the air, as well as a miniature set of the show. He also corresponded with other celebrities, and kept autographed photos of stars on his walls.
When he wasn't watching the Letterman show, Mr. Scales worked in retail management and attended St. Benedict Church in Covington.
