Betty Fortner, found pleasure in giving aid
Betty Margaret Fortner would get the call and always be ready to help. As an operator for AT&T;, she would assist the person on the other end of the line. As a member of the Erlanger Volunteer Fire Department, she served her community for 26 years.
Ms. Fortner, 57, of Erlanger, died Monday at the Deaconess Hospital in Cincinnati.
"She just liked helping people, " said her brother Harold E. Fortner, of Florence, Ky. "She did stuff like that all the time."
As the oldest child of two brothers and one sister, Ms. Fortner would be placed in charge of her siblings by her father when they needed to work around the house.
"She was a mother type, " he said. "She took care of us when we were little. Big sister took care of the little ones."
She was a member of Stringtown Quilters Club and Bracken County Quilters Club.
"After she left AT&T;, she needed something to do, " he said.
So her mother, Margaret Fortner, of Dry Ridge, Ky., and sister, Janice E. Stephens, of Walton, Ky., helped get her into quilting after she retired as a long distance operator, Harold Fortner said.
She loved making patch quilts -- using all sorts of different materials. She made quilts for many Kentucky counties. The clubs donated many of the quilts.
Her parents helped her buy a house in Erlanger after AT&T; hired her. She never moved.
She took care of her horse of 30 years, Dandy. She loved riding the white-gray horse up until Dandy's knees became poor because of age.
Ms. Fortner looked after her nieces and nephews as if they were her own children.
"She loved my kids, " he said. "She'd come over and make their rooms."
Even during retirement, Ms. Fortner stayed active in the community.
"She was well-known in Erlanger, " her brother said.
She was also an emergency medical technician and a member of the Independence, Licking Valley and Stewartsville homemakers clubs.
She was recently awarded the key to the city of Erlanger because of her 26 years of service to the community. She loved talking about it even though few had seen it, her brother said.
Ms. Fortner is survived by her mother, Margaret Fortner of Dry Ridge; a sister, Janice E. Stephens of Walton; and brothers, Harold E. Fortner of Florence and Donald M. Fortner of Dry Ridge.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Dry Ridge. Jonathan Melik Finley Adams, 7 weeks, the son of Stephanie Adams Turner of Newport and Jason Finley of Covington, died Sunday at Children's Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati.
Other survivors include a sister, Felicity Adams of Newport; brothers, Caleb Finley of Green Bay, Wis., and Isaiah Adams of Newport; and grandparents, John Adams and Trish Adams Kramer of Alexandria, and Sue and Carl Finley of Harrodsburg.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at A.C. Dobbling and Son Funeral Home, Bellevue.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Betty Louise Clark, 81, of Erlanger, died Tuesday at Village Care Center, Erlanger.

Donald Stanley Davies, 55, of Wilder, died at 7:45 a.m. Tuesday at his home.
He was an employee of New Perceptions, Edgewood, and a member of St. United Church of Christ, Bellevue.
Survivors include his mother, Mabel Davies; sisters, Judy Bryant of Highland Heights, Sandy Guckiean of Wilder and Michele Blanton of Independence.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Cyrus Robert Girkin, 78, of Fort Thomas, died Tuesday at his home.
He was a retired engineer with L&N; Railroad, a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Engineers and Fort Thomas Lodge No. 808 F&AM.;
He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth McMaster Girkin; a daughter, Karen A. Girkin of Fort Thomas; sons, Bobby Girkin of Cold Spring and Gary Wayne Girkin of California; a brother, Harold L. Girkin of Cincinnati; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at A.C. Dobbling and Son Funeral Home, Fort Thomas.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Betty J. Shields Harrison, 78, of Newport, died at 5:20 a.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
She was a retired cook with Heringer's Caf�. Her husband, Howard Harrison, died in 1978. A son, William Harrison, died in 1990.
Survivors include sisters, Barbara Shields, Belva Shields, Romona Stanfield and Shirley Tucker, all of Newport; a brother, Arthur Shields of Newport; and a granddaughter.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Evergreen cemetery Chapel, Southgate.
Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Thursday.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Gloria Hollon, 61, of Southgate, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include a daughter, Tina Coleman of Verona; sons, Bob Hollon of Southgate and Tim Hollon of Covington; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Verona First Full Gospel Church of God.
Cremation will be at Northern Kentucky Crematory, Walton.

Bob "Charlie" Johnson, 55, of Independence, died at 11:05 a.m. Monday at his home.
He was a retired Covington firefighter and former Taylor Mill police officer, and a member of Latonia Baptist Church.
He was a former assistant director of general services with the Covington Water Works Department.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Leach Johnson; sons, Bob Johnson of Independence and John Johnson of Latonia; brothers, Jimmy Johnson of Independence and Wayne Johnson of Latonia; a sister, Phyllis Johnson of Taylor Mill; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia.

Emmette Lee Mann, 81, of Williamstown, died Monday at Summit Hilltop Nursing Home, Cincinnati.
He was a retired farmer.
Survivors include daughters, Patricia Mann and Theresa Whaley, both of Williamstown, and Judith Osborne of Dry Ridge; a brother, Virgil Mann of Williamstown; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Alma Murphy, 80, of Costa Mesa, Calif., died Sunday at her home.

Charlyne Nichols, of Florence, died Monday at her home.
She was a service worker with Drake Memorial Hospital.
Her husband, Earnie Nichols, died in 1970.
Survivors include daughters, Carol Reinhardt of Union; Deborah Cundiff of Virginia Beach, Va.; sisters, Vernon Abbott and Bertha Siggers, both of Connersville, Ind.; brothers, Harvey Brady of Lawrenceburg, Ind., and Robert Brady of Richmond, Ind.; and four grandchildren.

Raymond L. Ruley, 75, of Florence, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
He was a factory worker with Hopple Plastic Co.
Survivors include his wife, Carol Sue Ruley; a son, Kevin Carter of Sparta; a daughter, Jaime Krohman of Walton; brothers, Gene Ruley of North Ogden, Utha, John Ruley of Ventura, Calif., and Charles Ruley of Wheelersburg, Ohio; sisters, Judy Lawhorn of Warren, Ohio, Ethlyn King of Dayton, Ohio, and Arthalene Brumfield of Portsmouth, Ohio; and five grandchildren.

Evelyn F. Shambaugh, 78, of Bromley, died Monday at Village Care Center, Erlanger.
She as a manager with Arcade Gift Shop, Cincinnati.
Her husband, Robert Shambaugh, died in 2002.
Survivors include a nephew, John Fiedler of Cincinnati.

Deborah Ann Stover, 47, of Highland Heights, died at 9:50 p.m. Monday at her home.
She was a former food service worker with Hardees, Highland Heights.
Survivors include her husband, Ken Stover; her patents, Zane Westerfield of Indianapolis and Marjorie A. Jorgensen of Denver; a son, Allen William Stover of Highland Heights and Anthony Michael Tolbert of Cincinnati; a daughter, Angela Dawn Stover of Covington; and a sister, Connie Walters of Denver.

Kenny Straub, 24, of Dry Ridge, drowned Monday in Williamstown Lake.
He was a member of Lawrenceville Baptist Church.
Survivors include his parents, Donnie Straub of Demossville and Frances McIntosh of Butler; a brother, Steven Straub of Demossville; a sister, Jennifer Clifford of Fort Thomas; a half-sister, Jacqueline Clifford of Butler; and grandmother, Gladys Stone of Dry Ridge.

Margaret "Peg" Stulz, 95, of Ludlow, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
She was a homemaker, a retired cafeteria manager at Sts. Boniface and James School in Ludlow, and a member of Sts. Boniface and James Church, St. Mary Altar Society, Ludlow Grandmothers, Kehoe Council Knights of Columbus Auxiliary.
She was a former election worker.
Her husband, Harry "Hap" Stulz, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Patricia Hemmer of Fort Mitchell and Mary Ellen Kidd of Ludlow; sons, Robert Stulz of Independence, Charles Stulz of Edgewood, Marty Stulz and Greg Stulz, both of Ludlow; a brother, Albert Jordan of Ludlow; 20 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Sts. Boniface and James Church.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.
Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
