'Bernie' Blau, hunter and environmentalist
Bernard J. "Bernie" Blau could always find the common ground. As an avid hunter and an environmentalist, Mr. Blau helped pull the two groups together. Through his mediating skills as an attorney, he fought for cleaner water and equal opportunity in education.
Mr. Blau, 64, of Fort Thomas died at 3:25 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.
He championed causes that uplifted people. He won a lawsuit that made sure children with autism received equal education.
"He really mentored young people, " said longtime friend Annie Bennett of Fort Thomas. "He really believed in helping people reach their potential. He was a role model."
There were two major themes in Mr. Blau's life: education and the environment.
He was an attorney with Jolly, Blau, Kriege & Turner in Cold Spring, and belonged to the Campbell County and Kentucky Bar Associations. He started a scholarship fund for law students.
"He used his education to do the right thing, " said his wife, Cheryl Blau.
As the chairman of Water Sentinels, Mr. Blau fought for cleaner water in Northern Kentucky. He would routinely check water quality in local streams. He was also a member of the Sierra Club and the Campbell County Game & Fish Association.
A lover of the outdoors, Mr. Blau spent many afternoons fly-fishing and duck hunting.
When hunters and environmentalists couldn't get along, he brought them together in meetings to tell them of their common interests.
"He worked real hard to bridge that gap, " Bennett said. "Hunters and environmentalists can be very polarized. He brought people together."
Mr. Blau helped found one of the first Ducks Unlimited organizations in Kentucky.
Mr. Blau attended Loyola University in Chicago on a swimming scholarship. Excelling in the butterfly and breaststroke, he was unbeaten and later inducted into the Loyola Hall of Fame at Loyola, his wife said.
In 1960, he narrowly missed qualifying for the Olympics.
He earned his law degree from the University of Louisville.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons, Adam Blau, Cameron Blau and David Blau, all of Fort Thomas; a daughter, Valerie Eder of Crescent Springs; sisters, Rose Ann Dabek and Caroline Meier, both of Cincinnati, Mary Fran Breiling of Boulder Creek, Calif., and Ruth Blau of Union; brothers, Edward Blau of Marshfield, Wis., and Robert L.
