H.A. Anneken, loved work, grandchildren

Howard A. Anneken Sr., loved to explore Kentucky state parks with his children and grandchildren.

Every summer when his children were young, he would take them on a weeklong trip to a park near a lake. They would stay in cabins and spend the time swimming and boating. Later, he continued the tradition with his grandchildren.

Mr. Anneken, 88, of Villa Hills, formerly of Fort Wright, died Saturday at Madonna Manor, Villa Hills.

"He was always clowning around, " said his son James E. Anneken of Brentwood, Tenn.

Mr. Anneken liked to lavish attention on his grandchildren, taking them to the neighborhood convenience store to buy them candy.

He had a great sense of humor, but there were two things his dad always took seriously -- religion and work -- James Anneken said.

"He never missed church on Sunday, no matter what was going on, " he said.

Mr. Anneken was a member of St. Agnes Church in Covington, where he was in the Holy Name Society and the Knights of Columbus.

An accountant, he was a former president of Hale-Justis Drug Co. and a former comptroller at Columbia Oldsmobile. He retired from the latter at age 65, even though he could have left earlier.

"I guess he was an old German that just loved to work, " his son said.

He was a man who believed in doing his work "correctly and thoroughly, " said another son, Dr. Howard A. Anneken Jr., of Fort Mitchell. "Integrity and a strong religious foundation were a driving force in the way he lived his life."

Mr. Anneken was an Army veteran of World War II, in which he served as an officer in India. Two daughters, Kathe Anneken and Mary Katherine Anneken, preceded him in death.

In addition to his sons, survivors include his wife, Mary Kudela Anneken; a daughter, Margaret A. "Peggi" Anneken of Cincinnati; sisters, Sister Gemma Anneken O.S.B., Sister Clarita Anneken O.S.B., Sister Xavier Anneken O.S.B., and Sister Juanita Anneken O.S.B., all of Villa Hills; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
