Charles Casey, 88, helped establish fair
Charles Casey would drive every member of his grandson's baseball team to Granny's ice cream parlor in Independence in the back of his pick-up truck after each game, rain or shine.
"They all knew they got to go, whether they won or not, " said Mr. Casey's daughter-in-law, Gina Casey of Erlanger.
She said Mr. Casey, an avid sports fan, never missed a local sporting event when his grandchildren were involved. His family's teammates affectionately dubbed him "Grandpa."

She said her father's name would live on through his namesake, a third great-grandchild born on Friday and named Charles Robert Casey in his honor. "I think he might have been holding on for that, " Gina Casey said.
Mr. Casey helped establish the Kenton County Fair in 1952. He remained on the fair board until his death.
"Charlie put in a lot of time and worked very hard, " said Bill Durr of Independence, a fellow member of the fair board. "He was a very congenial person and took a lot of interest in community affairs."
He said that although Mr. Casey could not attend the fair in recent years due to his failing health, he still cared passionately for the annual event.
"He would call me every night and ask how it was last night and how many people were there, " Durr said. "He was missed and will continue to be missed."
