Helen Rash Kramer, scholar, instructor

George Kramer didn't know how to dance 43 years ago, but that didn't stop him from asking his future wife to dance at a supper club in Cincinnati.

When they got onto the dance floor, he admitted he couldn't dance and asked to buy her a drink instead.

"I bought her drinks for 43 years, " Kramer said.

Kramer's wife, Helen Carol Rash Kramer, 70, of Owenton, died Friday at the couple's home.

"Helen was probably the most unusual person I've ever met, " Kramer said.

She was a homemaker, a literature scholar, a motivational speaker and a ballroom dance instructor. She wrote dinner theater plays and country-western songs. She spent 17 years visiting nursing homes to energize residents.

But what Kramer will miss the most about his wife is her compassion.

During a visit to New Orleans four years ago, Mrs. Kramer was approached by a man who said he was unemployed and needed money to feed his wife and three children who were with him. She gave him $20 and got in the car.

A few minutes later, her husband, who was trailing behind, was approached by the same man. Kramer said he gave the man $20.

When Kramer got into the car, his wife asked him how much money he gave the man and Kramer told her.

"She said, 'Good. So did I, '" he said.

Mrs. Kramer had a philosophy about helping others. Kramer said his wife would say: "You never know when Christ is out there testing people."
