William Fisk, jeweler, took care of his family
William D. Fisk always had an open door and a spare room for his family. Whenever a niece or nephew was going through hard times and needed a place to stay, they could count on Uncle Bill.
"He took care of everybody, " said his sister, Barbara Bamberger of Latonia.
Mr. Fisk, 75, of Latonia, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.
"He was a real humble person, " Bamberger said.
He was always working, she said. Mr. Fisk worked for 35 years as a jeweler with the Gordon B. Miller Co. in Cincinnati. After retiring, he got bored quickly. In his brief retirement, he went to a McDonald's in the morning and sat around with the other retirees. He couldn't sit around and listen to them "talk about silly things."
He soon thereafter started working for Emblematic Tool and Design Co. in Over-the-Rhine. He made plaques for the company for six years.
Mr. Fisk knew many people at the racetrack, he loved it there. He would visit once a week.
After being diagnosed with cancer, he told his sister, "I got to get to the racetrack one more time."
Several of his nephews took him to River Downs on June 20.
"We were so happy we were able to do that for him, " Bamberger said.
A bus stop was constantly near where Mr. Fisk lived. He never drove a vehicle. He either walked or rode the bus. However, his family had no idea why he never drove, since he was perfectly capable, his sister said.
"Nobody ever asked him that, " she said. "We were so used to him riding buses."
He was very independent, his sister said.
If it were 20 degrees below zero, he'd be walking to the grocery store, she said.
Several years ago when his furnace broke during a cold winter, he stayed in his cold house for two days before calling to get it fixed. When he was offered to be put in a hotel, he was more concerned with his family's well-being.
"He never wanted to worry me, " his sister said.
