Clem Brossart, instilled work ethic in children
Clem Brossart never wanted his sons playing baseball. He loved watching his grandchildren hit the baseball in his yard, though.
In his retirement, Mr. Brossart wanted to spend a lot of time with his family. It was well-earned time. He loaded trucks for Durkee Food Services in Sharonville, Ohio, for 35 years before retiring in 1980. Throughout his career, his pastime was farming cattle and tobacco.
Mr. Brossart, 88, of California, Ky., died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.
"All he did was work, " said his son, Norman Brossart, of California, Ky., adding that his father's work ethic was instilled in all his children. "He was a great dad to us kids."
When he was able-bodied, Mr. Brossart loved to hunt for turtles in Kenton County. He'd go every weekend. Sometimes he would catch 50 to 60 turtles per outing, his son said.
Otherwise, he didn't care too much to be an outdoorsman. "He never did fish much, " Norman Brossart said. "I don't think he ever did."
He was a former board member of the Kentucky Farm Bureau. Farming stayed with Mr. Brossart, even in retirement. He kept busy with raising tobacco and attending senior citizen meetings with his wife of 67 years, Helen.
He was a member of St. Peter and Paul Parish, California, as well as Catholic Order of Foresters, Sun Valley Seniors and St. Peter and Paul Seniors.
Survivors include his wife, Helen; sons, Lawrence Brossart and Norman Brossart, both of California; daughters, Stella Von Essen of Indianapolis, Mildred Baynum and Pam Bezold, both of Alexandria, Joann Fornash, Theresa Bezold, and Andrea Shaw, all of California, and Joyce McClafferty of Wilder; 22 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Peter and Paul Parish, California. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Prayers will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be at St. Peter and Paul Cemetery, California.
