Lawrence Rust, served popular fish sandwiches

Every Friday for 43 years, Lawrence Raymond Rust served up 600 pounds of fish sandwiches at the Ole Dinner Bell restaurant in Southgate.
"You had to call in an order on Thursday to make sure you got one on Friday, " said his son, Jeff Rust, of Taylor Mill.

Lawrence Raymond Rust, 87, of Alexandria, died Friday at Woodspoint Nursing Home in Florence. He was owner of the Ole Dinner Bell from 1947-1990.

Mr. Rust also catered many events in the area, including the Belle of Louisville races on the Ohio River.

But mostly, he loved the opportunity the restaurant provided to be around other people.

"Talking was the biggest gift God gave him, " Jeff Rust said.

"He always spent time with the customers bragging about his kids and his brothers and sisters. With his wife and us kids, it didn't matter if he had nothing as long as we had everything."

Mr. Rust was a member of St. Mary Church in Alexandria and the first inductee into the Northern Kentucky Hall of Fame for fast pitch softball.

He was also an Air Force veteran of World War II.

In addition to his son Jeff Rust, survivors include his wife, Thelma Post Rust; sons, Lawrence J. Rust of Villa Hills, William Rust of Burlington, John Rust of Independence and James R. Rust of Grants Lick; daughters, Marty M. Sizemore of Taylor Mill and Ann Marie Rust of Latonia; a brothers, Richard Rust of Fort Thomas and Milton Rust of Southgate; sisters, Edna Mae O'Conner of Ponta Verdi, Mich., Lillian O'Dell and Laverne Wehrman, both of Cincinnati, and Helen Enzweiler of Southgate; and 11 grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Church in Alexandria. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at A.C. Dobbling and Son Funeral Home in Fort Thomas. Burial will be in Mother of God cemetery in Fort Wright. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2A, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Allene Rowland Barnes, 76, of Berry, died Sunday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Colemansville Christian Church. Her husband, Audrey Redd Barnes, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons, Joe Barnes, Mike Barnes, Rick Barnes and Tim Barnes, all of Harrison County; daughters, Judy Benson of Lexington and Debbie Marcum of Richmond; a brother, Russell Rowland of Erlanger; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pythian Grove Cemetery, Berry. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 508 E. Pike St., Cynthiana, Ky. 41031; or American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2A, Florence, Ky. 41042.

Eula Maye Wear Bennett, 84, of Ludlow, died at 9:45 p.m. Saturday at Rosedale Manor Nursing Home, Latonia. She was a retired clerk with the Internal Revenue Service and a member of First Baptist Church of Ludlow. Her first husband, Eugene Wear, died in 1970. Her second husband, Stanley Bennett, died in 1980.

Survivors include a son, Michael E. Wear of Elsmere; a stepdaughter, Jane Kaepplin of Fairhaven, N.J.; a brother, Eugene Housely of Etowah, Tenn.; a sister, Estelle Carrol of Lake Station, Ind.; and two granddaughters.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, Ludlow. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Ludlow. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer's Disease Association, 644 Linn St., Suite 1026, Cincinnati, Ohio 45203.

Ronald Lamar Cottie, 63, of Covington, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Covington.

Survivors include his wife, Loretta Cottie; a daughter, Rosalind DuBose of Cincinnati; sons, Ronald Cottie Jr. of Shreveport, La., Steve Cottie of Covington and David Lane of Covington.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Morning Star Baptist Church, Cincinnati. Visitation will begin there at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Joseph R. Garr Funeral Home, Cincinnati, is handling arrangements.

Betty J. Sandal DeKnight, 71, of Clearwater, Fla., formerly of Lakeside Park, died Saturday at Cypress Palms of Largo, Fla. She was an insurance administrator and a member of St. Brendan Church in Clearwater.

Survivors include sisters, Blanche Doll of Covington and Erma Davis of Largo, Fla.; a niece and nephews.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Moss-Feaster Funeral Home/Serenity Gardens Chapel, Largo, is handling arrangements.

Herman Brown Douglas, 88, of Fort Thomas, died at 1:09 p.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired driver and salesman with Husman's Potato Chips in Cincinnati, and a member of the Knights of Columbus Father DeJaco Council in Alexandria, Bellevue Vets, VFW Post No. 3186 and St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Alexandria. He was a member of the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame, and a Marine Corps veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Adele Douglas; a daughter, Nancy A. Liska of California; a son, Larry Douglas of Alexandria; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with Knights of Columbus services at 7 p.m. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2A, Florence, Ky. 41042; or Knights of Columbus Father DeJaco Council, 11186 S. Licking Pike, Alexandria, Ky. 41001.

Kenneth Wade Duncan, 41, of Florence, died Tuesday at his residence. He was a senior computer analysis with Convergys.

Survivors include his parents, Donald and Regina Duncan of Independence; brothers, Trevor Duncan of Independence and Chadwick Duncan of Tavernier, Fla.; a sister, Anita M. Blevins of Salt Lake City, Utah; a stepbrother, Randel Franklin of Tampa, Fla.; stepsisters, Carol A. Franklin of Milford, Conn., and Robin Emmons of Albany, N.J.; and grandmothers, Mabel Elizabeth Duncan of Mullens, W.Va., and Arrettia Evelyn Weaver of New Richmond, W.Va.

Services were Saturday at Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Elsmere. Cremation was at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati.

Linda Carolyn Fightmaster, 63, of Sparta, died Friday at Gallatin Health Care Center, Warsaw. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, William Fightmaster; a daughter, Donna Thompson of Florida; sons, Scott Silvey of Florida and Terrance Gaylor of North Carolina; three stepdaughters and a stepson; a brother, Harley "Beecher" Jackson of Texas; a sister, Rebecca Monday of Norwood, Ohio; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Visitation will begin there 11 a.m. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Gallatin Health Care Center Activity Fund, 499 Center Ave., Warsaw, Ky. 41095.

Frank Florence, 82, of Taylorsville, formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Saturday at Valley View Health Care Center, Taylorsville.

Thelma Jane Gebhard, 82, of Erlanger, died Saturday at Florence Park Care Center. She was a jewelry department manager with McAlpin's Department Store, and a member of St. Henry Church in Elsmere and the St. Henry Altar Society. A daughter, Nancy Jane Roenker, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband, Gus J. "Buddy" Gebhard; a daughter, Melanie Jeanne Brummer of Villa Hills; a sister, Estelle Hegge of Ellenton, Fla.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Henry Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Sandra Rudd Lykins, 54, of Verona, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

Robert W. McCarty, 77, of Cincinnati, formerly of Latonia, died at 4:30 a.m. Sunday at Deaconess Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Latonia.

Survivors include a half-brother, Tom McCarty of Tucson, Ariz.; and a sister, Betty Frakes of Fort Wright.

Services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Burial will be in Paris Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Margaret E. Wiehoff McDaniel, 72, of Taylor Mill, died at 9 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a retired cafeteria manager with Latonia Elementary School, a former PTA president with Seventh District and Glenn O. Swing schools in Covington and a member of Latonia Christian Church. She was also a member of the church Women's Christian Circle. Her husband, Carl C. McDaniel, died in 1988.

Survivors include sons, Danny J. McDaniel and Michael C. McDaniel, both of Taylor Mill, and Patrick K. McDaniel of Roanoke, Va.; daughters, Peggy A. Rowekamp of Covington and Sharon M. Braunwart of Taylor Mill; brothers, Le Roy Wiehoff of Ocala, Fla., Edward Wiehoff of Florence and James Wiehoff of Latonia; a sister, Alice Tunning of Florence; 14 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.

Dorothy R. Ross, 87, of Cincinnati, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of St. John Vianney Church, Cincinnati. Her husband, Robert Ross, died in 1974.

Survivors include a son, the Rev. Robert J. Ross of Covington, a niece and a nephew.

Joann Bedell Saxton, 69, of Destin, Fla., formerly of Kenton County, died Friday at Destin Health Center.

Survivors include a brother, George Thomas Bedell of Destin; and sisters, Dianne Combs of Morning View, Sandy Duncan of Independence, Debbie Dunn and Rosie Bolton, both of Fort Walton, Fla., Terri Bolton of Crestview, Fla., and Shauna McDaniel of Florence.

Leslie E. "Gene" Soard, 75, of Taylor Mill, died at 8:25 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired plumber with Riedinger Plumbing in Fort Wright, a member of Epworth Methodist Church in Covington and Kelly Furnish VFW Post No. 7099 in Covington, and an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Mae Morrison Soard; a son, Dennis E. Soard of Covington; a daughter, Darla Edmondson of Fort Thomas; a sister, Vera Wieland of Morning View; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Edward D. Storer, 91, of Crestview, died at 6:04 p.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired supervisor with American Linen Supply, Cincinnati, a member of Disabled American Veterans and American Legion Post No. 200 in Louisville, he was an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Garnett Ortlieb Storer, died in 1990. A daughter, Joyce Ann Storer, died in 1994. A son, James Storer, died in 2003.

Survivors include a daughter, Pamela Storer of Crestview; two granddaughters and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Howard "Slim" Tomlin, 71, of Williamstown, died July 4 at his home. He was a laborer.

Survivors include his sister, Laura Mae Webster of Corinth.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will begin there at noon. Burial will be in Williamstown Cemetery.

Sidney C. Walker, 45, of Georgetown, died at 9 p.m. Saturday in a Scott County motorcycle accident.

He was a factory worker with Hoover Wire in Georgetown and a member of Trinity Assembly of God Church, Georgetown, and was an Army Reserve veteran.

Survivors include a daughter, Billie Jo Walker of Georgetown; a son, Shannon Walker of Georgetown; his mother, Lucy Walker Dews of Corinth; his sisters, Nancy King and Eula Mae Smith, both of Georgetown; and brothers, Stanford Walker Jr. of Owenton County and Billy Walker of Paris.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at McDaniel Funeral Home, Corinth. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Raven Creek Cemetery, Harrison County.
