Nellie Greene
1915-2003
Nellie Mae Greene, 88, of State Highway 1773, Grayson, Ky., passed away November 21, 2003, in King's Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Ky.
She was born Jan. 4, 1915, in Greenup County, Ky., a daughter of the late Willard and Minnie Fritz Riffe.
Mrs. Greene was a homemaker and was a member of Brushart Christian Church.
Her husband, Austin Greene, preceded her in death.
Surviving are her son, Raymond and Jannie Greene of Greenup County; three daughters, Loretta and James Clifton of Grayson, Deloris Dowdy of South Shore, Ky., and Ella Mae and Don Billups of Troy, Ohio; two brothers, Oscar and Bertha Riffe of Greenup, Ky., and Walter and Nora Riffe of South Shore, Ky.; one sister, Clotean and Follett Abdon of Lloyd, Ky.; seven grandchildren, Mitchell and Jovenna Clifton, Wanda and John Walker, Paul Austin and Kathy Dowdy, Phillip Dowdy, Gregory and Becky Greene, Donna Jo and Danny Neves and Crissie Billups; six great-grandchildren, Lacy Clifton, Dylan Clifton, Mandy Walker, Jonlyn Walker, Shawn Greene and Zackery Neves; and one sister-in-law, Mildred Riffe of Columbus, Ohio.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Willard and Hazel Riffe, Arnold and Bert Riffe, Paul and Alma Riffe, Clifford and Cora Mae Riffe and Raymond Riffe; two sisters, Irene and Orville Bear and Mundane and Asia Fannin; one son-in-law, Paul Dowdy; and one granddaughter, Angela Billups.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, Nov. 24, at 1 p.m. at Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson with Larry Barrell officiating. Burial will follow in Riffe Family cemetery in Zion Hill in Greenup County.
Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, and after 9 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Otho Logan, 84, building inspector
Otho Louis "Toad" Logan, 84, of Friendship, died Friday, June 14, 1996 at Southern Ohio Medical Center.
Born Oct. 8, 1911, in Greenup County, Ky., a son of the late Hiram and Clara Billups Logan, he was a retired building inspector for Greene County, a self-employed building contractor, a member of Southern Ohio Fox Hunters Association and a community volunteer.
Surviving are his wife, Margie Schwamberger Logan; four daughters, Juanita Wolfenbarger and Deborah Gray, both of Portsmouth, Cleo Gregg of Bellbrook and Naia Risner of Friendship; three sons, Phillip Logan of Michigan, Mark Thompson of Friendship and Louis Thompson of Piketon; five sisters, Mamie Molton of Lucasville, Delpha Hignite of Sciotoville, Kate Cooper of Eden Park, Mary Bellamy of Dayton and Norma Springer of North Carolina; three brothers, Ralph Logan of Wilmington, Rufus Logan of Columbus and Bill Logan of Miamisburg; two grandchildren who were raised in his home, Keith Wolfenbarger of Portsmouth and Tonya Blevins of Stout; 17 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.
He also was preceded in death by a son, Otho Louis Logan Jr.; and three sisters, Malissa Frazee, Anna Patrick and Helen Logan.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Roger W. Davis Funeral Home in West Portsmouth, with the Rev. John Martin officiating and interment in Friendship Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday.

Phillip Logan, 25, construction worker
Phillip Dale Logan, 25, of South Shore, Ky., died Saturday evening, May 13, 1995, at Southern Ohio Medical Center following a one-vehicle accident in South Shore.
Born June 10, 1969, in Portsmouth, a son of Michael L. Logan of South Shore and Phyllis Jeanie Smith Boyles of South Shore Route 2, he was a 1988 graduate of Greenup High School and worked as an operator and construction worker.
Surviving besides his parents are his fiance', Crystal Wullschleger of Home, Kans.; his stepfather, Gerald Boyles of South Shore Route 2; a brother, David Logan of South Shore; a sister, Mrs. Sherry Wills of South Shore; and his grandmothers, Mrs. Margaret Logan of South Shore and Mrs. Venus Smith of Greenup.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 17, at Roberson Funeral Home, with the Rev. Cline McCallister and the Rev. Jeff Lambert officiating, and interment in Mt. Zion cemetery on South Shore Route 1.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. until the funeral hour Wednesday.

Prominent Citizen Is Found Dead
Shumate Logan, age 77 years, was found dead on his porch at his home last Tuesday evening on Reeves Branch, a tributary of Tygart Creek, about eight miles west of this city. Coroner Clarence W. Henderson was called and pronounced his death due to cerebral hemorrhage, due to high blood pressure, from which he had been a suffering for several years, it was said.
He complained to his son, a few moments before his death, of the leader in his neck was giving him a lot of pain and showed his son how it had swollen, and his son going on about his work, was soon notified that he had been found dead. He was a member of a pioneer family of this and Lewis as well as Rowan counties, and leaves but two sisters of this family, Mrs. Mary Clark of Upper Tygart and Mrs. Tennessee Rivers of Soldier; three brothers, Ledford, Perry and Jack Logan.
Three children, Mrs. Allie Raybourn at home; Milford Logan, at home and Claude Logan of English, W. Va.; 15 grandchildren besides a host of relatives and numerous friends who will miss his every day kind acts and helpfulness in the community. For years he had lived a devout Christian life and was prepared to go. His wife and two daughters had preceded him in death.
The funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon with burial in the Logan cemetery near the home.

Baby Gregory
Funeral services for the four day’s old son of Mr. and Mrs. King Gregory, Long Meadow Addition, Sciotoville, who was found dead in bed early Thursday morning were held Thursday afternoon from the home with the Rev. Charles Reinhard of the Sciotoville Christian church in charge. The child was ill with strangling spells Wednesday and had to have the attention of a physician. Death was due to natural causes, an examination of the body showed Thursday. The burial was in Greenlawn cemetery.

King Gregory
King E. Gregory, 89, of 5637 Auburn Ave., Sciotoville, died at 2:15 a.m. today in Scioto Memorial Hospital.
A native of Manchester, he was a retired Ohio Stove Co. employe.
Preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Minerva Gregory, in 1971(sic), he is survived by two sons, Carl, 5568 Auburn Ave., Sciotoville, and Willard, 5713 Auburn Ave., Sciotoville; a brother Leroy Gregorry of Cincinnati; a sister, Mrs. Nina King of Sanford Fla.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services are to be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Gill Funeral Home, with Rev. J. E. Pottenger officiating. Interment is to be in Greenlawn Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 tonight.

Mrs. Minerva Etta Gregory, 85, of 5637 Auburn Ave, Sciotoville, died at 6 a.m. today in Mercy Hospital.
A native of Greenup County, Ky., she is survived by her husband, King Gregory; two sons, Carl F., 5568 Auburn Ave, Sciotoville, and Willard E., 5713 Auburn Ave., Sciotoville: two sisters, Mrs. Faitha Hoover, 933 Third St., and Mrs. Julia Bussey of Sciotoville Rt. 4; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services are to be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. at Gill Funeral Home with Rev. Joseph Pottenger officiating. Interment is to be in Greenlawn Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. Saturday.

Anna Gulley, 84, New Boston resident
Anna M. Gulley, 84, of New Boston, died Monday, Nov. 13, 1995, at Southern Ohio Medical Center.
Born Oct. 26, 1911, in Cater County, Ky., a daughter of the late Clinton and Amelia Adams Hamilton, she was a member of Ohio Avenue Christian Church.
Surviving are her husband, Dallas O. Gulley, whom she married
May 5, 1930, a son Raymond Gulley of New Boston, Phyllis Boyd of St. Lucie, Fla., and Carolyn Wells and Connie Massie, both of New Boston, two sisters, Laura Emrick of Dunedin, Fla., and Marie Thompson, of Amelia; 16 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by a son, Don Gulley.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Pennington-Bishop Funeral Home in New Boston, with the Rev. John Gowdy officiating, and interment in Memorial Burial Park.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and for an hour before the services Thursday.

Ruth Gulley, 71, retired merchant
Ruth Gulley, 71, of Portsmouth, a former Vanceburg (Ky.) resident, died Friday, May 20, 1994, at a sister’s home in Portsmouth after a long illness.
Born June 16, 1922, in Lewis County Ky., a daughter of the late Ralph and Leeota Smith Gulley, she was a retired Vanceburg merchant and a member of the Vanceburg Christian Church and Vanceburg Historical Society.
Surviving are three sisters, Christina Mowery of Portsmouth, Lois Ripato of Maysville, Ky., and Gladys Ware of Dublin, Ga.
She also was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Hogge.
Services will be at Vanceburg Christian Church, with Rob Morton officiating, and interment in Black Oak Cemetery.
Friends may call at Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday and from 8 a.m. until the services Tuesday.
