Howard O. Schneider, businessman, Mason
When Howard O. Schneider graduated from Lloyd Memorial High School in Erlanger in 1944, he didn't receive his diploma with his classmates. He was busy learning how to swim -- the hard way.
Upon being drafted by the Navy before graduation in 1944, Mr. Schneider had no idea how to swim, but he was told he'd learn quickly. His fellow mates tossed him off the ship, and he taught himself to stay afloat.
Mr. Schneider, 77, of Florence, died Sunday at his residence.
Mr. Schneider, who was a World War II veteran, owned Schneider Shoe Repair in Florence for 51 years. He ran the business with his wife, Mary.
"They were together 24 hours a day, " said his son Michael Schneider of Florence.
Even though their business didn't make them wealthy, he always found a way to give to others.
"He was a giving person, " his son said.
If a person was in dire need of a shoe repair, but had no money, Mr. Schneider would fix the shoes for free, his son said.
He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 159, Clay; Masonic Lodge No. 949, Florence; Masonic Lodge No. 757, Hebron; Scottish Rite, KCCH; York Rite, KYCH; Florence Eastern Star No. 559; and past associate grand guardian with Kentucky Jobs Daughters.
"He learned in Masonry to take care of others, " his son said.
Mr. Schneider helped with these charitable causes for 56 years, including children who were hearing impaired.
He used his pride and joy -- outdoor work -- to help others, as well.
In his garden, he grew more food than his family could eat. He would give lettuce, cabbage and broccoli to his neighbors. And he made his own sauerkraut.
He also taught his family the Navy way to mop a house.
"He was a very caring father, " Michael Schneider said. "He wanted us to have the best."
Survivors in addition to his son include his wife, Mary Schneider; a daughter, Damie J. Scott of Westwood; a brother, C.M. Bud Schneider of Edgewater, Fla.; a sister, Melba A. Bramerloh of Florence; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
