George Horton, WWII veteran, lithographer

George G. Horton always kept the door of his Ludlow home open, waiting for a game. Mr. Horton invited anyone who passed by to play some cards or Yahtzee. He made many friends with his hospitality.

"He was a stranger to no one, " said his daughter, Kathy Jones of Florence.

Mr. Horton, 81, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence.

He was a lithographer retired from Technicraft Lithographing Co., in Cincinnati, where his work included prints for Procter and Gamble and of Riverfront Stadium. He worked for the company from the 1948 until retiring in 1982.

He served in the Navy during World War II on the USS Essex, an aircraft carrier on which he helped to land planes.

"He lost his hearing because of it, " Jones said.

He came home with a chest full of medals, including the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign, the Philippine Liberation Medal (two stars) and the Presidential Unit Citation (one star).

Mr. Horton always could make people laugh. On a trip with his son-in-law about 15 years ago, they encountered a herd of buffalo.

"You got to keep your eye on that bull, " Mr. Horton told his son-in-law, Steve Jones of Florence.

He had no sooner given that advice than the buffalo charged. Both men fled and hopped a fence to safety.

"I never had seen the man run, but I did that day, " Jones said.

Mr. Horton traveled the world. He saw all of the United States, except for Alaska.

"He put an impact on people, " his daughter said.

On his many visits to Washington, D.C., to visit his son Melvin, he made more friends. Members of Melvin's softball team cared so much for Mr. Horton that they are coming to his funeral Friday.

Mr. Horton loved watching the Cincinnati Reds and John Wayne movies.

He was a member of Ludlow Veterans, Bromley Veterans and Ludlow Senior Citizens. He was a past commander of the Ludlow American Legion Post. His wife, Ruth Ziegler Horton, died in 1997.

Mr. Horton was particularly fond of his grandchildren.

"Nobody could hold the babies other than him, " his daughter said. "Until they got walking, everybody had to fight him to hold the baby. He was very gentle with them. He was basically their caretaker."
