Charles Miller, hero at war and at home
World War II ended in Europe on May 8, 1945, but it didn't end for Charles Edward Miller until many months later.
Mr. Miller, 80, who died Thursday at Northern Kentucky Care & Rehabilitation in Highland Heights, joined the Army as soon as he left high school.
The former Bellevue resident fought in the European Theater. His niece, Barbara Rawe of New Port Richey, Fla., called him one of the unsung heroes of the war.
He was commended for one mission in which he had to crawl to some German booby traps and detonate them, she said.
During the Battle of the Bulge, a mortar round exploded and sent shrapnel into his leg. He spent a year in a hospital in Luxembourg before he could come home.
He never bragged about his war experience, Rawe said. Only recently did his family persuade him to obtain a military pension.
He was reluctant to take the money, she said, because he felt it a duty and an honor to fight for his country.
Mr. Miller was a retired dispatcher with a cab company in Loraine, Ohio, but he walked everywhere and never owned a car.
He often hopped on a bus to buy groceries for residents of the apartment complex in Dayton where his sister, Hazel Sparks, lives.
"I can't speak too highly of him, " Rawe said.
