Helen Daly, dedicated and honored volunteer
Helen Margaret Breen Daly was so dedicated to helping others that she was named the 1996 United Way Volunteer of the Year for her work with Catholic Social Services of Northern Kentucky.
"She took the gospel values very seriously, " said her son, Hugh F. "Trey" Daly III, of Cincinnati. "She believed that you don't just read about it in a book. You live it out day by day."
Mrs. Daly, 82, of Park Hills, died Saturday at her home.
She was a choir director, Sunday school teacher, Ladies Sodality president and volunteer with the Catholic Church, and was a representative at the 1967 Vatican Third World Conference as president of the Military Council of Catholic Women.
She was a receptionist at Catholic Social Services and a board member since 1981. She was a member of Mother of God Church in Covington and the Covington Catholic Bridge Marathon and Villa Madonna Bridge clubs.
Mrs. Daly was a graduate of Boston Girls Latin School and pursued graduate studies at the Lexington (Ky.) Theological Seminary.
"Her personality was a combination of feistiness and graciousness, " said her son. "She was never afraid of taking a minority opinion and advocating for it passionately.
"She also was a very gracious entertainer, no matter whether she had known you for decades or just met you."
Trey Daly said when he was 9 years old he observed a classic example of his mother helping others.
"We were on a trip from New York City to Kentucky and mom struck up a conversation with a young woman with a small child, " he said. "The woman said she didn't have enough money for a ticket.
"My mom gave her some money. It could have been a scam, but it didn't matter. She had a real sense of calling to be like Christ to other people. That is what motivated her."
As a receptionist at Catholic Social Services, Mrs. Daly usually was the first person that people in need encountered.
"Most of these people had a crisis, and mom put them at ease and helped them get the services they needed, " said her son.
Mrs. Daly had studied to be an opera singer when she was young, and although she didn't make the opera her career, she remained a great fan of classical music throughout her life.
