Harry 'Jim' Messer, always willing to help
Harry "Jim" Messer was the kind of person who always wanted to help. It didn't matter what kind of personal trouble the Fort Mitchell resident was having, said his employer, Tom Green, owner and president of the John R. Green Co.
"His heart was huge, " Green said.
Mr. Messer, who died Saturday at age 51, started working for the Green Co. as a co-op student in high school. He spent more than 30 years with the company, working his way up from making deliveries to making sales. For 27 of those years, he worked with Gene Turner of Newport, who knew him as a hard worker who was organized.
Mr. Messer could sit down and argue pretty heatedly with a friend and stay friends with him, Turner said, which made him an unusual person.
He was very outgoing and jovial, Green said. "If there was going to be a social event, he wanted to be on the committee, " Green said.
When he wasn't working, Mr. Messer devoted himself to his family. He took care of his wife, the former Deborah Hicks, through a long battle with muscular dystrophy, a battle she lost just five weeks ago.
Their son, Michael, also has the disease. Mr. Messer coached his son and others for years in the Area 7 Special Olympics.
Those weekend games often kept him from attending services at the Highland Baptist Tabernacle in Fort Thomas, where he was a member.
A lot of men would have walked away from the situation the disease put Mr. Messer in, Turner said, but he never heard Mr. Messer complain about it. "I always admired him for that, " Turner said.
