Thomas Wiggins, 52, loved to make things
Thomas Randall Wiggins found his niche in life when he moved to Covington three years ago.
Mr. Wiggins, 52, who died Tuesday at his home there, became a code enforcer with the city of Covington in January and he loved his job, said his wife, Judy Holt Wiggins.
He covered the Latonia area, and did wonders with getting homes cleaned up and grass cut, she said. "He kept people on their toes, " she said.
The Wigginses moved into a Scott Street house built in 1872 and proceeded to fix it up. Mr. Wiggins got involved in the Covington Block Watch program and in trying to improve the neighborhood.
He and his wife worked to defeat a plan to put the Life Learning Center, a one-stop center for the homeless, on Madison Avenue just south of the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption.
"That was a cause for him. He was very adamant about that, " his wife said. "He had his beliefs and ideals, and he stuck to them."
When he wasn't trying to improve his neighborhood, Mr. Wiggins tried to improve his house. He planted flowers, made mantles for his fireplaces, hand-painted designs on the staircase and installed a pond in the backyard.
"He loved to make things, " his wife said.
Mr. Wiggins lived most of his life on the other side of the Ohio. He grew up in downtown Cincinnati, where his mother owned some boarding houses, then moved to Linwood, where he met his future wife in 1973.
They lived in Anderson Township and then Amelia. Mr. Wiggins worked 13 years as an assembler for the General Electric Co. in Sharonville, also serving as shop steward for the United Auto Workers local.
The Wigginses moved to Covington when their children graduated from high school. "I think it was meant for us to come, " his wife said.
