Anne Brierley of Florence, a model mother
Frank Sloan says he wasn't the best son in the world when he was growing up, but his mother had a lot of faith in him.
The schoolteacher and former minister credited his mother, Anne G. Potter Brierley, with making him 90 percent of what he is today.
Mrs. Brierley, 84, of Florence, who died Thursday, instilled a great love of reading in her children, as well as an ability to stretch her food budget.
The retired dietitian for Lakeside Place Nursing Home also saw to it that her family ate well.
She baked and decorated cakes for all occasions, including a traditional gingerbread house for Christmas.
The children hated to eat it, not because it wasn't tasty, but because it looked so good, said another son, Fred Sloan of Union.
Born in Letcher County, the daughter of a coal miner, Mrs. Brierley moved to the tri-state during World War II, when she helped make aircraft engines at the former Curtis-Wright factory in Sharonville.
She moved her family to Dayton in 1954 and became a member of what would become the Dayton-Bellevue Church of Christ.
She would serve as an officer in the ladies' auxiliary and also taught Sunday school.
Last year, she became a member of the Hilltop Church of Christ in Taylor Mill.
One of her proudest moments came in the 1960s. Initially cool to the idea of desegregation, she later became a marcher for civil rights.
She told an interviewer, "I feel like I need to do this as a citizen of America and a Christian."
"She made me so proud, " Frank Sloan said.
Her husband, Hiram Brierley, and a son, Larry V. Brierley, both preceded her in death.
