Walter Hamblin loved farming, wrote songs

When it came time for Major Walter "Sam" Hamblin Jr. to put his military career to an end, he chose to move to a farm in Demossville where he could enjoy the peace and quiet of life on the farm.

He spent the next 10 years enjoying a stable life, free from the constant moving that accompanies career military men and women.

"He enjoyed the peace and quiet of working by himself out on the farm, " said his wife, Donna. "We were both city people living out on the farm, but he really liked it."

Hamblin, 64, of Demossville, died Friday at his residence. In addition to farming and a military career in which he served in Vietnam, Hamblin was also manager and owner of Peaselburg Inn, Covington.

Life on the farm seemed right for Hamblin after a 22-year career in the military.

Hamblin moved to Northern Kentucky from Corbin when his father moved the family to take a job.

After he met and married his wife he entered the U.S. Air Force for one year, but had trouble finding a job when he got out. He decided to enter the Army because of the attractive medical coverage, his wife said.

After a three-year stint in Texas with his family a few years back, Hamblin adopted the country look, wearing a cowboy hat and boots religiously for the rest of his life.

And in between his efforts with cattle and horses, growing vegetables and raising four children, he managed to forge a song-writing team with his son, Samuel, who lives in Demossville as well.

"My son would play the guitar and the two of them would work out the lyrics, " Mrs. Hamblin said. "He loved country music."

Despite his love for his family, Hamblin's often used his skills as a military officer to discipline his children.

"He was soft-spoken, but when he said something you knew darn well he meant it, " Mrs. Hamblin said. "My son used to say he treated him just like one of the G.I.s."
