Roy V. Hogle, 73, veteran of two wars
Roy V. Hogle once survived a head-on collision with a semi tractor-trailer that peeled the top off his car.
He spent the next two weeks in a coma, and lost a few fingers at the first knuckle.
That made it a little harder to do one of the things he did very well, playing bluegrass music on the mandolin.
"He could play the guitar. He loved the banjo, but he was really great on the mandolin, " said his sister, Charlene Frazier Beck of Camp Springs.
Mr. Hogle, 73, who died Saturday at the Veteran's Medical Center in Cincinnati, was drafted into the Army when he was 18 along with his twin brother, Ray, who is now deceased.
He would spend 20 years with the Army, his first post in Anchorage, Alaska.
He was a veteran of the Korean War and of two tours of duty in Vietnam.
An excellent marksman, he earned the M-14 Expert Marksmanship and Sharpshooter medals.
He worked on heavy equipment and tanks, and became an ace mechanic, his sister said.
After he retired from the Army, he still supported himself doing mechanic work.
He loved children and couldn't stand to see them in need. "You would say 'No' to your child, and the first thing you know he would be sneaking behind your back and giving it to them, " his sister said.
When he died, even the hospital doctor cried, his sister said.
