Mabel Benson, former Boone Circuit Clerk
Mabel Benson didn't intend on becoming the circuit court clerk of Boone County. That was her husband's job.
But when Charles Benson died in 1968 with two years left on his six-year term, Ms. Benson accepted the appointment to take on her husband's job.
And when it came election time, Ms. Benson decided to run herself. Stan Benson said he often saw his mother turn down contributions and she did very little of the traditional campaigning most politicians do. But she won three elections as Boone Circuit Clerk, finally retiring from the office in 1988.
"To do that and do no campaigning, people must have liked her pretty well, " Benson said.
Ms. Benson died Sunday at her home in Florence. She was 80.
She grew up in Erlanger and met her husband in Burlington when they were in high school. In the early years, she worked at the then-tiny Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport as a waitress at the Sky Chef.
Stan Benson said his mom -- who was called "Mabel" by most people, including her kids -- had an acerbic sense of humor and loved people.
"Mabel had a great sense of humor. She was a riot, " he said. "Every sentence started with 'Oh Lord, honey, ' or ended with '(comma) honey.'"
Ms. Benson was loved by the kids who lived on her street and by her pet cat, Tabby, an overweight, 15-year-old feline who followed Ms. Benson wherever she went.
What she didn't care much about was finances, said Stan Benson, of Florence.
"Mabel cared about money less than anybody I ever met, " he said. "She just felt like if you were worried about saving money and that was your main goal in life, you were on the wrong path in life."
She was a member of Florence Baptist Church.
