James Cull, owned trucking company
When James Davis Cull phoned his wife Wednesday from Elizabethtown, he didn't know that he was dying.
The Dry Ridge resident was driving his truck back from Tennessee when he started to have severe chest pains, said his brother, Dry Ridge Mayor Bill Cull.
James Cull told his wife, Vicki Hammond Cull, a secretary at Grant County Middle School, that he thought he had picked up a virus.
She suggested he pull over and rest, but he told her he thought he could make it to the terminal. Suddenly, his cell phone went dead.
Witnesses said that Mr. Cull held his truck steady, steering it from the center lane to the side of the road, where it hit an embankment and a tree, knocking off the right front axle.
The injuries he sustained in the accident weren't serious enough to kill him, the mayor said, adding that it appears he had a heart attack.
Mr. Cull, 57, grew up on a farm in Owen County. His family moved to Grant County after a fire in 1953.
He owned and operated Cull Trucking Co. and leased trucks to Ace Doran Trucking in Cincinnati. His sons, Matt and John Cull of Dry Ridge, worked with him.
In his spare time, Mr. Cull raised beef cattle on his 150-acre Grant County farm. He enjoyed hanging out at local mechanics' shops and playing with his six grandchildren.
He was a member of the Dry Ridge Baptist Church.
"He was just a loving young man, " his brother said.
