Callie 'Blaine' Eisner, owned go-go bar
Callie M. "Blaine" Eisner, a businesswoman and former burlesque dancer who opened the first go-go bar in Newport and went on to work for one of the area's most prominent developers, died Sunday at her home in Fort Thomas. She was 72.
Ms. Eisner came from humble beginnings but was a hard worker who lied about her age to get her first job managing a soda line at a drug store at 13, said her daughter, Dodie Eisner of Fort Thomas.
She continued that work ethic in show business, dancing in Chicago with Gypsy Rose Lee and opening several clubs in Illinois before moving back to Kentucky. In Newport, Ms. Eisner opened the Pink Pussycat, the city's first go-go club.
"She was born in a log cabin the mountains of Kentucky and had limited education, " Dodie Eisner said. "But she went on to win several fortunes in her lifetime."
Dodie Eisner said in burlesque, her mother and other dancers relied on suggestiveness rather than the explicitness that prevails today in many clubs.
"They danced beautifully, and they were never nude. It was all illusion, " she said.
In her later years, Ms. Eisner went to work as an administrative assistant for the Hosea Company, which has been responsible for much of Newport's recent development. Dodie Eisner said her mom was a keen businesswoman whom people trusted.
"She was always, always in the middle of one business deal or something. She was very successful in a time when most women were not, " Dodie Eisner said. "She was a man among men, but she was a woman."
Dodie Eisner said she would remember her mother most as being her best friend.
"Most of all, she was the best mother anyone could have ever had, " she said.
