Ralph Vater, owned Triangle Cleaning
It was impossible to be down in the dumps when Ralph Lloyd Vater was around.
"He would never leave your presence without making you laugh or smile, " said Mr. Vater's granddaughter, Ginger Smith of Orlando, Fla.
"You couldn't be grumpy around him."
Mr. Vater, 79, of Cincinnati, formerly of Alexandria and Bellevue, died of cancer Monday at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati.
He owned and operated Triangle Cleaning of Bellevue for more than 50 years.
The firm cleaned everything from skyscraper windows to home carpets.
Mr. Vater was a World War II Navy veteran.
"People were his focus, " said Smith.
"He would give anything that he had if it would help somebody else out."
He had a bubbly personality.
"He was a joker, " said his granddaughter.
"He would joke about everything. He always found something to make you smile.
"He had a strong commitment to the Lord and a strong commitment to his family. His family meant everything to him. If we needed him, he was there. He was our rock and support."
Other survivors include Mr. Vater's wife of 58 years, Thelma Vater; daughters Becky Brunner of Cincinnati and Nila McCarthy and Ginny Smith, both of Davenport, Fla.; a son, Gayle Vater of Southgate; a sister, Mary Stargardt of Cincinnati, 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Calvary Baptist Church, Latonia.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church.
Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.
Alexandria Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy Bickel, 84, of California, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
Her husband, Roscoe Bickel, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Dennis Woods of Woodford, Va., Norman Paul Bickel of Triangle, Va., Roy Bickel of California, Edward Bickel of Bellevue and James Bickel of Highland Heights; and 11 grandchildren.
Private services will be at the convenience of the family.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 tonight at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth.
Burial will be in Mount Vernon Cemetery.
Anna Marie Hoffman Cook, 95, of Fort Thomas, died at 2:45 p.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
She was a retired bookkeeper and cashier with G.G. Grimm & Sons and a member of the Over 55 Club at St. Thomas Church, Fort Thomas.
Her husband, Howard E. Cook, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Georgia Gellenbeck of Cincinnati; six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Thomas Church, Fort Thomas.
Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas.
Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Anna Lee Daugherty, 79, of Florence, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
She was a homemaker and a member of St. Paul Church, Florence.
Survivors include her husband, Lawrence Wilbert Daugherty; sons, John Daugherty of Covington, Tim Daugherty of Florence and Gary Daugherty of Cincinnati; daughters, Nancy Caldwell of Independence, Judy Gould of Batavia, Ohio, Patty Magee of Elsmere, Pam Vaughn and Darlene Daugherty, both of Florence; sisters, Mary Louise Cross of Piner and Irene Rust of Morning View; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.
Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Thursday.
Entombment will be in Forest Lawn Mausoleum, Erlanger.

Lorraine Mary Dunbar, 82, of Highland Heights, died at 9:50 p.m. Monday at Lakeside Care and Rehabilitation Center, Highland Heights.
She was a retired dietitian's assistant at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington, and a past president of Lawler-Hanlon VFW Post No. 5662 Ladies Auxiliary, Newport.
Her husband, Harold Dunbar, died in 2000.
Survivors include a daughter, Sandra Kay Ellison of Highland Heights; a brother, James Huck of Cincinnati; two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas.
Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Friday.
Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.
Charles W. "Wally" Evans II, 23, of Maysville, died at 9:51 p.m. Saturday in Willow Springs, N.C.
He was a tree trimmer with Asplundh Tree Service.
Survivors include a son, Charles Walter Evans III of Maysville; his parents, Brenda Fay and Charles Walter Evans Jr. of Maysville; a sister, Jennifer J. Soister of Fleming County; a half-sister, Charlotte Hunt of Fleming County; and grandparents, Helen Evans, and Richard and Emma Fite, all of Maysville.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Brell and Son Funeral Home, Maysville.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Mount Tabor Cemetery, Ewing.
Mildred Josephine Kessler Folmer, 94, of Pendleton County, died Tuesday at Riverside Nursing Home, Butler.

Bradford H. Piner, 90, of Alexandria, died Monday at his home.
He was a retired supervisor with Ford Motor Co., a member of Hyde Park Masonic Lodge and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. His wife, Bonnetta Fay Piner, died in 1998.
Survivors include daughters, Jo Ann Shively of Williamsburg, Ohio, and Betty Owen of Alexandria; a son, Bradford L. Piner of Missouri City, Texas; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Gardnersville Cemetery.

James Allen Sanders, 36, of Cynthiana, died Friday at Bourbon General Hospital, Paris.
Survivors include his wife, Alice Wiggins Sanders; a son, Justin Sanders of Cynthiana; a brother, Joseph Ray Sanders of Paris; and a sister, Deborah Young of Georgetown.
Graveside services were this morning at Harrison County Cemetery, Cynthiana.
Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana, is handling arrangements.
Earl T. Scheek, of Augusta, died Monday at his home.
He was a farmer. A son, Paul Scheek, preceded him in death.
Survivors include a brother, George Scheek of Augusta, and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Metcalfe-Hennessey Funeral Home, Augusta.
Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Sharon Cemetery, Bracken County.

Joan Bradford Sullivan, 82, of Covington, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
She was a retired secretary with Wadsworth Electric Co., Covington.
There are no immediate survivors.
Services will be at 10 a.m. EST Friday at St. Mary Cemetery, North Vernon, Ind.
