George Irvin Warneford, built his family a houseboat
George Irvin Warneford was a guy who could build just about anything. When his children were young, he fashioned an electric swing in the backyard of his family's home in Covington.
"It was like we had our own amusement park ride, " said a son, Geoff Warneford of Covington. Later, Mr. Warneford designed and built a 45-foot-long, steel-hulled houseboat on which his family spent much of their warm-weather recreational time from 1959 to 1965.
"He had grown up around boats and was in the Merchant Marines during World War II, " Geoff Warneford said. The Warnefords plied the Ohio and Kentucky rivers on the boat, for everything from one-day excursions to week-long vacations.
Mr. Warneford died Friday at his home. He was 83. He augmented his natural mechanical aptitude by reading, and from experience in a long career with his family's business, Warneford Electric.
