Virginia Kruse, 75, was 'always there' for people
Everybody should be so lucky to have a sister like Virginia "Jenny" Kruse.
"I went through cancer two times, and the first time Jenny stayed with me a year, and the second time she stayed with me a year and a half, " said Mrs. Kruse's sister, Gloria Clark of Cincinnati.
"She was not just my sister. She was my best friend and my confidant. She was always there for me and a lot of other people."
Mrs. Kruse, 75, of Covington, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence.
She was a homemaker. Her husband of 45 years, Charles Kruse, preceded her in death.
Mrs. Kruse reared five children of her own and also reared two grandchildren, a twin boy and girl, who she was given legal custody of when they were 1 day old.
"She was a wonderful mother and grandmother, " said Mrs. Clark. "My children were crazy about her. She wanted to help everybody out. She loved kids. She absolutely loved babies."
Mrs. Kruse also had a special affection for cats and kept numerous cats as pets throughout her lifetime.
She had a green thumb.
"She could do anything with plants, " said Mrs. Clark. "She used to come over and take care of my plants for me."
Mrs. Kruse also was an avid reader of fiction and enjoyed watching educational programs on television.
"She could explain things to others in a way that made good sense, " said Mrs. Clark. "She was a lovely person, a really wonderful person."
Other survivors include sons, Mike Kruse of Erlanger, Wayne Kruse of West Covington and Jamie Kruse of Florence; daughters, Jean Boyd of Independence, Amie Haynes of Florence, Linda Long of Morning View and Susan Spenneberg of Florence; brothers, William Smeal of Phoenix, James Smeal of Florence, Alfred Smeal of Greensburg, Ind., and Ritchie Smeal of Demossville; sisters, Joyce Smeal of Demossville and Theresa Hutchins of Crittenden; 21 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Virginia Kruse Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 15104, Covington, Ky. 41015.
Robert C. Bell Sr., 77, of Park Hills, died at 8:30 p.m. Friday at his home. He was a tool and die maker with Ford Motor Co. and an Army veteran of World War II. A son, Christopher T. Bell, died in 1973.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Rita Spare Bell; daughters, Victoria A. Cioffe of Florence, Jennifer M. Rochford of Cleveland and Mary Beth Bell of Erlanger; sons, Robert C. Bell Jr. and James J. Bell, both of Union, Jack A. Bell of Edgewood and Thomas A. Bell of Florence; nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Agnes Church, Fort Wright. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
Joseph Norman Boucher, 79, of Covington, died at 2:50 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a machinist with General Electric, Cincinnati, and a Navy veteran of World War II. His wife, Myrtle L. Bauer, died in 1977. A stepson, Jon McDaniel, died in 1998.
Survivors include stepdaughters, Penny Henderson of Mount Olivet and Luise Carson of Latonia; a stepson, Steve McDaniel of Covington; and a brother, Raymond Boucher of South Grafton, Maine.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will begin there at noon Wednesday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
George Thomas Evans, 87, of Highland Heights, died Saturday at his home. He was a retired machine operator with U.S. Drill Head Co., Cincinnati, and an Army veteran. His wife, Marie Evans, preceded him in death.
Survivors include sons, Steve Evans of Highland Heights and Daniel Evans of Florence; daughters, Kathleen Wartman of Latonia and Cecilia Clifford of Montgomery, Ala.; and eight grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Wednesday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075.
Jesse Ray Hammonds, 39, of Covington, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
Arrangements are pending at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger.
Dorothy Campbell Harney, 90, of Latonia, died at 10 a.m. Saturday at Woodcrest Manor, Elsmere. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Harold Harney, died in 1982.
Survivors include a son, James Harney of Cincinnati; daughters, Pat Lovell of Taylor Mill and Cheryl Lynn Orcutt of South Barrington, Ill.; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Entombment will be in Sanctuary Crematory Mausoleum, Seminole, Fla. Loraine Crawford Morris, 83, of Warsaw, died Saturday at her home. She was a retired seamstress. Her husband, Claude D. Morris Sr., preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Sandra Pazo of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Connie Johnson of Lawrenceburg; sons, Claude Morris Jr. of Verona and Hershel Morris of Bunnel, Fla.; a sister, Mary Rainey of Lexington; 15 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Hinton-Turner Funeral Home, Paris. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Paris.
Mildred A. Justice Powell, 84, of League City, Texas, formerly of Newport, died Friday at Baywind Village Nursing Home, League City. She was a homemaker and a former employee of the Durkee Spice Co., Cincinnati. A son, Ermon Lee Stepp, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Peggy Abner of League City; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at A.C. Dobbling and Son Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Gladys Ray, 85, of Warsaw, died Friday at Gallatin County Health Care Center, Warsaw. She was a former cook with the Gallatin County Board of Education and the former Glencoe School. She was a member of Bramlette Baptist Church. Her husband, James Ray, died in 2001. An infant son, James Harlan Ray, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Charles E. Ray of Highland Heights and a sister, Kitty Montgomery of Warsaw.

Mary Emily Scruggs, 73, of New Liberty, died Friday at her home. She was a homemaker, a former employee of Dayton-Walther Co., and was a member of the Ghent Second Baptist Church. She was a volunteer at the church and at Owenton Manor.
Survivors include her husband, William "Weebe" Scruggs; a son, Johnny Scruggs of New Liberty; a daughter, Jackie Coleman of New Liberty; and brothers, James Robert Brightwell of Carrollton, Ray Livers of Madison, Ind., Emory Livers and Claude Livers, both of Cincinnati.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at New Liberty Second Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at McDonald and New Funeral Home, Main Street location, Owenton. Janice Faye Sizemore, 62, of Newport, died Friday at her home. She was a waitress. Her husband, Glenn Sizemore, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Glenn Sizemore of Cincinnati; sisters, Audrey Dunn of Campton and Linda Finch of Kendle City; and a brother, Johnny Prater of Lexington.
No services are planned. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport.
Charles "Rick" Smith, 50, of Brooksville, died Friday at Robertson County Health Care Center, Mount Olivet. He was a retired employee of Kent Corp., Bellevue.
Survivors include his wife, Diane Jett Smith; a son, Brad Smith of Brooksville; sisters, Kathy Kiskaden of Augusta, Nancy McConnell of Mount Olivet, Gretchen Smith and Leslie Smith, both of Louisville, Shelia Smith, Sharon Smith, Brenda Smith and Shirley Smith, all of Kentucky; brothers, Tony Smith of Augusta and Timmy Smith of Dayton; and a granddaughter.

Brian Stamm, 43, of Latonia, died Friday at his home. He was disabled.
Survivors include his parents, Bill and Gail Stamm of Taylor Mill; a brother, Billy Ray Stamm of Independence; and sisters, Tracy Stamm and Stephanie Stamm, both of Taylor Mill.

Lillian J. Sweeney, 73, of Erlanger, died Tuesday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker.
Her husband, Clinton C. Sweeney, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Michael Sweeney of Walton and Patrick Sweeney of Crittenden; a brother, Clyde Steckel of Burlington; and eight grandchildren.

Ardella June Tucker, 65, of Brooksville, died Sunday at her home. She was a school bus driver.

Tucker, all of Brooksville; sisters, Janice Lucas and Sharleen Jefferson, both of Brooksville, and Donna Finn of Germantown; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Irene Singleton Vanover, 80, of Bellevue, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
Her husband, Harold Vanover; a son, James Bruce Elliott; and a daughter, Mary Louise Hahn, all preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, John M. Elliott of Trenton, Ill., and Jay Vanover of Bellevue; a daughter, Rita Ann Moeller of Loveland, Ohio; a sister, Ada Brashear of Hazard; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

William Thomas "Woody" Wood, 46, of Crittenden, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a machinist with Dynatec.
Survivors include sisters, Deborah Owens of Independence and Connie Woodall of Florence; a niece and nephews.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.
