Jack Kline, 65, truck driver, veteran, patriot
You didn't dare say anything bad about America in front of Jack Kline.
"He could be very vocal when someone would say anything wrong about his country or his flag, " said Mr. Kline's wife of 43 years, Patricia Menninger Kline.
"He stood up for his country. He was a very patriotic man. Everything was right, nothing was wrong, about America to him."
Mr. Kline, 65, of Union, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospital South in Edgewood.
He was a truck driver for Roadway Express for 29 years and was a member of Roadway's elite Million Mile Safe Driving Club.
Mr. Kline was a member of St. Timothy Church in Union and belonged to the St. Timothy's Young in Spirit seniors group.
He was past grand knight of the Father DeJaco Council of the Knights of Columbus in Alexandria and a member of the Fourth Degree Bishop Flaget Assembly of the Knights of Columbus.
Mr. Kline was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, where he served as a machinist mate, and was a member of the John R. Little Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Southgate.
"He was a person with a tremendous sense of humor, " said Mrs. Kline.
"He called his heart doctor Doogie Houser and said just before being operated on that his surgeon was going to sharpen his Exacto knife.
"His main interest was his family, and he would do anything in the world for them. He was devoted and dedicated. Whenever he was in charge of something, it had to be done to the letter of the law."
Mr. Kline started a Knights of Columbus fishing derby for youngsters, participated in fund-raisers to help retarded children and played Santa Claus for children on his street.
"Once you got to know Jack and became his friend, you had a true friend for life, " said his wife.
Other survivors include a son, Jack A. Kline Jr. of O'Fallon, Ill.; a daughter, Debbie Kline Dorsel of Alexandria; and six grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Timothy Church in Union.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. at Dobbling Funeral Home in Fort Thomas.

Cynthia Bivens, 45, of Alexandria, died Sunday in an automobile accident in Lennoxburg. She worked in marketing. She was a member of Pendleton Country Club and condo association president at Wellington Place. A daughter, Sara Bivens, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Alisa Vanover of Cincinnati and Corrie Bivens of Taylor Mill; her parents, William and Sylvia Barnard of Cold Spring; and sisters, Leslie Hertzenberg of California, Debbie Hudson of Alexandria, and Sheila Hudson of Newport.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Alexandria. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.
Jean Sullivan Brauer, 70, of Fort Mitchell, died Monday at her residence. She was a homemaker, a retired sewing teacher from Northern Kentucky Vocational School, and a retired clerk from Bartlett & Co. She was a member of Redwood Guild, Hilltoppers, and Holy Spirit Church Social Club. Her first husband, James Sullivan, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, Melvin Brauer; daughters, Kathy Wise and Karen Braun, both of Lakeside Park, and Lori Sullivan of Crestview Hills; stepdaughters, Kathy Orosz of Columbus, Ohio, and Joan Cook of Iowa City, Iowa; sisters, Joan Berberich Abeln of Erlanger, Sr. Wilma Ann, S.N.D., of Park Hills, and Sr. Marge Wissman, O.S.F., of Greensburg, Ind.; and six grandchildren.

Rita P. Breeden, 45, of Owensboro, died Monday at Bon Harbor Nursing Home, Owensboro. She was disabled.
Survivors include her father, Donald E. Breeden of Elsmere; her mother, Ann Evans Martin of Crittenden; brothers, Arthur David Abshear of Seattle, Wash., Joe Duncan of Clearwater, Fla., Mark Breeden and Donald Lewis Breeden, both of Crittenden; a stepbrother, David Martin, Jr., of Georgia; and stepsisters, Betty L. Steffen of Alexandria and Rita Behrens of Covington.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Crittenden. Visitation will begin there at noon Thursday. Burial will be in Crittenden Cemetery. Marcella Ritter Conner, 83, of Williamstown, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Williams Catholic Church, Williamstown.
Survivors include her husband, William Jack Conner; sons, Jack Conner, Jr., of Williamstown, Jerry Conner and Larry Conner, both of Cincinnati; a daughter, Mary C. Smith of Williamstown; brothers, Bill Ritter and Tony Ritter, both of Cincinnati, Elmer Ritter of Lawrenceburg, and Paul Ritter of Williamstown; and sisters, Betty Perry of Williamstown, Rosemary Prues, Mary Sansone, Audrey Kuhn, Thelma Beck, and Regina Heim, all of Cincinnati.
Services will be at noon Wednesday at St. Williams Catholic Church, Williamstown. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Wednesday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Burial will be in Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati.
Sister Marie Gangwish, C.D.P., 85, of Melbourne, died Sunday at Holy Family Home, Melbourne.
She was a Roman Catholic nun with the Sisters of the Divine Providence.
Survivors include a sister, Muriel Ketterer of Fort Thomas.
Services will be at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Anne Chapel, Melbourne. Visitation will begin there at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Burial will be in St. Anne Convent Cemetery, Melbourne.

Jesse Ray Hammonds, 39, of Covington, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
He was an electrician for Local No. 212.
Survivors include his wife, Angela Hammonds; a son, Zachariah Wayne Hammonds of Covington; his father, Wayne Hammonds of Forest Park, Ohio; two stepbrothers and two stepsisters.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Linnemann Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. today.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Wilbur H. "Bill" Hillner, 90, of Prudenville, Mich., died Monday at King Nursing Centre, Houghton Lake, Mich.
His wife, Mary Caruso Hillner, preceded him in death.
Survivors include sons, Wilbur V. Hillner and John D. Hillner, both of Kentucky; a daughter, Carol Ewing of Kentucky; a sister, Hazel Krammer of Kentucky; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Houghton Lake Chapel at Christler Funeral Home, Houghton Lake, Mich. Burial will be in Denton Township Cemetery, Prudenville, Mich.

Jodie Kiskaden, 7 weeks, of Falmouth, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
Survivors include her mother, Edna Teague of Falmouth; her father, Jody Kiskaden of Falmouth; brothers, Bronson Teague of Falmouth and Justin Kiskaden of Butler; sisters, Shyann Cowans of Falmouth and Madison Kiskaden of Bracken County; and grandparents, Frank and Clara Harald of Falmouth.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth.
Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. today.
Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Grants Lick.
Cecil Wayne Marcum, 29, of Covington, died Sunday at his residence.
He was a self-employed landscaper.
Survivors include his wife, Audra M. Dryer; his father, Cecil E. Marcum of Covington; brothers, Randy Marcum of Cincinnati, Benny Saylor and Delbert Saylor, both of Covington; and sisters, Cecilia Hansel, Cathy Turner, Juanita Webster, and Eva O'Rourke, all of Cincinnati.
Services will be at 6 p.m. Monday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Covington.
There is no visitation.
Mr. Marcum will be cremated at Southwest Ohio Crematory, Milford, Ohio.
Virginia Powell, 77, of Independence, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Center, Covington.
She was a homemaker and a member of New Hope Tabernacle Church, Independence, and VFW Ladies Auxiliary No. 3205.
Her son, Dan Powell, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, Ellis Powell; a daughter, Brenda Sue Weaver of Independence; a sister, Dorothy Teegarden of Alexandria; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Chambers & Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
Donald R. "Little Man" Taylor, Jr., 27, of Covington, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Hospital North, Covington.
He was a construction worker.
Survivors include daughters, Katelyn Taylor and Alexis Taylor, both of Covington; his father, Donald Taylor of Morning View; his mother, Sue Taylor of Covington; and sisters, Angela Boling and Kim Taylor, both of Covington.
Services will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Don Catchen & Son Funeral Home, Covington.
Visitation will begin there at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.
