Harry C. Carl Jr., 78, leader in community
Harry C. Carl Jr. was a prominent Northern Kentucky business executive and community leader.
He was the former president of Dixie Dew Products Inc. of Elsmere, which makes sauces, fillings and toppings for the food industry, and was the past chairman of the Erlanger-Elsmere Board of Education.
Mr. Carl also was an elder emeritus of the Erlanger Christian Church, past president of the Erlanger Kiwanis and former president of the Tri-City YMCA.
"He was very community-minded, " said Margaret Bird Carl, Mr. Carl's wife of 54 years. "He loved working with his school and church and business and friends. He always wanted to give back."
Mr. Carl, 78, of Fort Mitchell, died Aug. 8 at his home.
In addition to heading Dixie Dew Products, Mr. Carl worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a bacteriologist and was past president of the Cincinnati Dairy Technology Society.
He was a member of the Erlanger-Elsmere Board of Education for 16 years and was a board member of Fort Mitchell Country Club.
Mr. Carl was a member of the Lloyd Memorial High School Alumni Hall of Fame and Alumni Association, as well as the University of Kentucky Alumni Association and Sigma Chi fraternity.
"He was very outgoing, loved people and spoke to everybody, " said Mrs. Carl. "He just enjoyed being with people. He had a full life and did so many good things."
Mr. Carl's favorite pastime was reading.
"He read all kinds of books, always seeking more knowledge, " said his wife. "Near the end of his life, when he was almost totally blind, he enjoyed listening to talking books from the library."
Other survivors include two daughters, Nancy C. Pennington of Fort Mitchell and Margaret A. Giniat of Winnetka, Ill.; a son, Robert C. Carl of Florence; a sister, Margaret Owen Carl of Erlanger, and five grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Erlanger Christian Church, 27 Graves Ave.
Funeral services will be at noon Saturday at the church.
Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home of Erlanger is handling arrangements.

Deltha Marie Allender, 57, of Alexandria, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a bookkeeper and cashier with Toyota Town, Florence, and a member of White Dove Baptist Church, Williamstown.
Survivors include her husband, Jimmy Allender; a daughter, Tammy Moore of Fort Thomas; brothers, J.D. Little of Williamstown and John Everett Little of Dry Ridge; sisters, Wanda Lee Collins of Williamstown, Darlene Kay Knight of Florence and Bonnie Carol Cosmah of Union; and a grandson.
Services will be at 8 p.m. Thursday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Grants Lick.
William Bates, 90, of Independence, died at 4:45 a.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was an electrician with Cincinnati Union Terminal and a deacon with Hickory Grove Baptist Church. His wife, Helen Baker Bates, died Jan. 21. A daughter, Barbara Joan Bates, died in 1997.

Survivors include daughters, Shirley Vincent of Independence and Patricia Gilpin of Glendale, Ohio; a sister, Laura Mae King of Taylor Mill; three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Jean Sullivan Brauer, 70, of Fort Mitchell, died Monday at her residence. She was a homemaker, a retired sewing teacher from Northern Kentucky Vocational School, and a retired clerk from Bartlett & Co. She was a member of Redwood Guild, Hilltoppers, and Holy Spirit Church Social Club. Her first husband, James Sullivan, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, Melvin Brauer; daughters, Kathy Wise and Karen Braun, both of Lakeside Park, and Lori Sullivan of Crestview Hills; stepdaughters, Kathy Orosz of Columbus, Ohio, and Joan Cook of Iowa City, Iowa; sisters, Joan Berberich Abeln of Erlanger, Sr. Wilma Ann, S.N.D., of Park Hills, and Sr. Marge Wissman, O.S.F., of Greensburg, Ind.; and six grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 tonight at Holy Spirit Church, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. George "Jack" Gildea, 84, of Fort Thomas, died at 2:35 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired binder with C.J. Krehbiel Printing Co., Cincinnati.
Survivors include Terry Glaser of Fort Thomas, who took care of Mr. Gildea.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Thomas Church, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, followed by prayers. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.
Alton W. Gray, 91, of Villa Hills, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a former mayor of Ruidoso Downs, N.M., and a former justice of the peace and field representative of the court in New Mexico. He was a member of Latonia Baptist Church, Salvation Army, and the Sheriff and Police Association of New Mexico. He was an Army veteran.
Survivors include a cousin, Charles Perry of Latonia.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will begin there at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Patricia Ann Hogan, 63, of Florence, died Tuesday at Florence Park Care Center. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include sons, Aaron Hogan of Verona, Timmy Hogan of Couer D'Alene, Idaho, and Toby Hogan of Villa Hills; a daughter, Judy Schrader of Fort Mitchell; brothers, Sandy and Jerry Wolf; 10 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Grant J. Janszen, 15, of Alexandria, died Monday at his home.
He was a sophomore at Bishop Brossart High School in Alexandria and a member of St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring.
Survivors include his mother, Glenna White Janszen of Alexandria; his father and stepmother, Jeff and Sara Janszen of Fort Thomas; a brother, Drew Janszen of Alexandria; a sister, Rachel Janszen of Highland Heights; a stepbrother, Lee Plummer of Fort Thomas; and grandparents, Pauline and Joe White of California and Joan Janszen of Highland Heights.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Bishop Brossart High School.

Edward F. Meyer, 86, of Fort Mitchell, died at 5:15 p.m. Monday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington.
He was owner of Meyer Grocery, and a deliveryman with Dixie Vending Co.

Joshua E. Motz, 27, of Covington, died Monday at his home. He was an insulator with CinFab Inc., Pleasant Ridge, Ohio.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Richard and Jacqueline Motz Keach of Cincinnati; a stepsister, Ashley Keach of Cincinnati; and stepbrother, Christopher Keach of Cincinnati.

Catherine H. Napier, 76, of Dayton, died Monday at Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati.
She was a housekeeper with Watson Hotel and a member of Sacred Heart Church, Bellevue.
Her husband, Joseph Napier, and a daughter, Robin Napier, both preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Pam Heskett of Cincinnati, Liz Rohman of Florence and Mary Waxler of Dayton; a sister, Patricia Taylor of Cincinnati; brothers, Joseph Fultz of Bellevue, Laurence Fultz and William Fultz, both of Covington; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Nancy Jane Schulte Utz, 50, of Taylor Mill, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.
She was a retired accounting department worker with Northern Kentucky University.
Survivors include daughters, Stephanie Utz, Jennifer Utz and Amy Utz, all at home; her mother, Helen L. Schulte of Bellevue; sisters, Carolyn Tomlinson of Paducah, Linda Wilson of Harrison, Ohio, and Marcia Taylor of Ellenwood, Ga.; brothers, R. Gregg Schulte of Columbia, S.C., Clifford "Skip" Schulte of Cincinnati, S. Doak Schulte of Beaverton, Ore., John Schulte of Farragut, Tenn., and Doug Schulte of Spotsylvania, Va.; nieces and nephews.
Memorials services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Patrick Church, Taylor Mill. A reception at the church will follow services.
Ms. Utz bequeathed her body to the University of Kentucky College of Medicine.
