Sutton Landry, 'loved helping people'

Whether you needed business advice or just wanted to chat about baseball or music or almost any other topic, Sutton Landry was the man to see.

"He knew a lot about a lot of things, " said Mr. Landry's wife of 34 years, Gloria Landry. "He was a very intelligent individual and had an encyclopedic memory. And he just loved helping people."

Mr. Landry, 55, of Anderson Township, Ohio, director of the Small Business Development Center at Northern Kentucky University the past 17 years, died Tuesday of prostate cancer.

A Phi beta Kappa graduate in English literature from Miami University and a master's of business administration graduate of the University of Cincinnati, he had a 25-year career in economic development in Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati.

Prior to coming to Northern Kentucky University in 1987, he was vice president of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, responsible for business retention and development.

At NKU, he oversaw designing and presenting small business training programs that helped hundreds of people start and grow small businesses.

He also was the founding director of the Family Business Center at NKU, a membership program for larger, privately held firms.

Last year, Mr. Landry was presented with the Small Business Development Center's Kentucky State Star Award.

He was a member of the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce. An alumnus of Leadership Northern Kentucky, he was named Economic Development Professional of the Year in 1996 by the Northern Kentucky Area Development District.

From 1998 to 2001 he was one of the authors of the weekly Cincinnati Post column, "Small Biz Ideas."

Mr. Landry also was a youth soccer coach.

His pastimes included reading, following sports and listening to music.

"He was a voracious reader, " said Mrs. Landry. "He read everything. There wasn't a book he didn't like."

Mr. Landry was a baseball fan with an enormous baseball card collection. His favorite team was the Boston Red Sox and his favorite player was Ted Williams.

He enjoyed concerts and had a wide taste in music that included rock, classical, bluegrass and jazz. He had an extensive record collection.

"In a word, what Sutton believed in was commitment, " said his wife. "He committed himself to his family first and foremost and to his work."

Mr. Landry was diagnosed with prostate cancer 5 years ago.

"He was very inspirational throughout his illness, " said Mrs. Landry. "He never complained. He never acted sick or used it as a crutch.

"We made a new commitment that we were going to live life to the fullest and we did. His life was a life well-lived."

Other survivors include his mother, Elaine; a son, Adam, and brothers, Doug, Philip, John and Sam.

There will be a memorial service for Mr. Landry at 2 p.m. Monday at the Anderson Hills Methodist Church in Anderson Township.
