Sutton Landry, 'loved helping people'
Whether you needed business advice or just wanted to chat about baseball or music or almost any other topic, Sutton Landry was the man to see.
"He knew a lot about a lot of things, " said Mr. Landry's wife of 34 years, Gloria Landry. "He was a very intelligent individual and had an encyclopedic memory. And he just loved helping people."
Mr. Landry, 55, of Anderson Township, Ohio, director of the Small Business Development Center at Northern Kentucky University the past 17 years, died Tuesday of prostate cancer.
A Phi beta Kappa graduate in English literature from Miami University and a master's of business administration graduate of the University of Cincinnati, he had a 25-year career in economic development in Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati.
Prior to coming to Northern Kentucky University in 1987, he was vice president of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, responsible for business retention and development.
At NKU, he oversaw designing and presenting small business training programs that helped hundreds of people start and grow small businesses.
He also was the founding director of the Family Business Center at NKU, a membership program for larger, privately held firms.
Last year, Mr. Landry was presented with the Small Business Development Center's Kentucky State Star Award.
He was a member of the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce. An alumnus of Leadership Northern Kentucky, he was named Economic Development Professional of the Year in 1996 by the Northern Kentucky Area Development District.
From 1998 to 2001 he was one of the authors of the weekly Cincinnati Post column, "Small Biz Ideas."
Mr. Landry also was a youth soccer coach.
His pastimes included reading, following sports and listening to music.
"He was a voracious reader, " said Mrs. Landry. "He read everything. There wasn't a book he didn't like."
Mr. Landry was a baseball fan with an enormous baseball card collection. His favorite team was the Boston Red Sox and his favorite player was Ted Williams.
He enjoyed concerts and had a wide taste in music that included rock, classical, bluegrass and jazz. He had an extensive record collection.
"In a word, what Sutton believed in was commitment, " said his wife. "He committed himself to his family first and foremost and to his work."
Mr. Landry was diagnosed with prostate cancer 5 years ago.
"He was very inspirational throughout his illness, " said Mrs. Landry. "He never complained. He never acted sick or used it as a crutch.
"We made a new commitment that we were going to live life to the fullest and we did. His life was a life well-lived."
Other survivors include his mother, Elaine; a son, Adam, and brothers, Doug, Philip, John and Sam.
There will be a memorial service for Mr. Landry at 2 p.m. Monday at the Anderson Hills Methodist Church in Anderson Township.

Dale Waldo Barr, 87, of Tampa, Fla., formerly of Bellevue, died at 10:40 p.m. Sunday at University Community Hospital Carrollwood, Tampa. He was the retired owner of Lindale Motel in Tampa and a former employee of LA. Gray Co. and Diamond International, Cincinnati. He was a member of Northwest Baptist Church, Tampa, and an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Dorothy High Barr, died in 2003.
Survivors include sons, Daniel Barr of Lutz, Fla., and Donald Barr of Land o' Lakes, Fla.; a sister, Irma June Ballman of Lexington; and a grandson.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Northwest Baptist Church, 2610 W. Silver Lake Drive, Tampa, Fla. 33614.
Luther Carroll, 93, of Highland Heights, died at 3:08 p.m. Monday at River Valley Nursing Home, Butler. He was a retired quality control worker with Ford Motor Co., Cincinnati, a member of Campbell County VFW Post No. 3205 in Alexandria and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. His first wife, Nora Carroll, died in 1987.
Survivors include his wife, Kathlyn Carroll; a daughter, Ruby Reinhardt of Alexandria; a brother, Clarence Carroll of Highland Heights; a sister, Mattie Moore of Highland Heights; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Friday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Hope, 909 Kenton Station Drive, Maysville, Ky. 41056.
James E. Courtney, 69, of Cincinnati, died Sunday at his home. He was an ironworker. His wife, Laura Fay Courtney, preceded him in death.
Survivors include a son, Rick Courtney of Cincinnati; a stepson, Don Bowers of Lawrenceburg, Ind.; a daughter, Tona Cummins of Cincinnati; a sister, Shirley York of Cincinnati; brothers, Charley Courtney of Hamilton, Ohio, and Tommy Courtney of Newport; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Ralph Meyers and Deters Funeral Home, Cincinnati. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
Thomas L. Goodpaster, 70, of Ludlow, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was the former owner of Atlas Upholstery Co., Ludlow. His wife, Barbara Neagle Goodpaster, died in 1993.
Survivors include a son, Michael Goodpaster of Ludlow; daughters, Susan Goodpaster of Ludlow, Sharon Evans of Covington and Theresa Rehmet of Taylor Mill; a brother, Robert Goodpaster of Cincinnati; seven grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Dialysis Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.
Mary Jane Grothaus, 73, of Ludlow, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
Arrangements are pending at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.
Edward E. Kessler, 81, of Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Florence, died Monday at Manor Baywood Hospital in Mesa. He was a retired employee of Florence Hardware and Yellowstone National Park, and was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. A sister, Mildred Folmer, died last week.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Endres Kessler; daughters, Linda Kruetzkamp of Union and Marilyn Suttles of Erlanger; sons, Charles Kessler of Burlington and Richard Kessler of Florence; a sister, Norma Kuchle of Crescent Springs; eight granddaughters and six great-grandchildren.
Private services will be at the convenience of the family.
Delta Perisutti, 88, of Cincinnati, formerly of Erlanger, died at 7:55 a.m. Wednesday at Mercy Anderson Hospital, Cincinnati. Her husband, Lawrence Perisutti Sr., died in 1969.
Survivors include a son, Lawrence Perisutti Jr. of Cincinnati; a daughter, Martha Harris of Bethel, Ohio; a brother, Armond Burdofer of Gardener, Kan.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
William P. Siller Sr., 75, of Newport, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was the retired owner of Siller's Bakery in Dayton, and worked at the Cookie Jar Bakery in Newport. He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Newport and Indra Consistory Scottish Rite in Covington, and a past master of Newport Masonic Lodge No. 358. His wife, Carolyn Siller, died in 1999.
Survivors include a daughter, Carole Lukjan of Fort Thomas; a son, Bill Siller Jr. of Covington; a sister, Marilyn Kelhoffer of Brookville, Ind.; and three granddaughters.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John United Church of Christ, Newport. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport, and from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. Scottish Rite services will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, followed by Masonic services at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Mark T. Steffen, 27, of Alexandria, died Monday at his parents' home in Highland Heights.
Survivors include his wife, Kathy G. Steffen; his parents, Thomas A. and Vickie Steffen, both of Highland Heights; a daughter, Nora Steffen, at home; a brother, Brad Steffen of Newport; and grandparents, Robert Brown of Highland Heights and Frances Stallard of Highland Heights.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Church, Alexandria. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Alexandria. Memorials are suggested to Mark Steffen Memorial Fund, in care of any Fifth Third Bank.
