Rev. David Estes, 51, pastor, leader in the community
Rev. David Timothy Estes, a longtime pastor and community leader, died at his home in Warsaw Wednesday. He was 51.
Born in Louisville, he became pastor at Warsaw Baptist Church eight years ago, where he became known for his love of children and his care for the sick and disabled.
"All the kids in the community loved Brother Tim. He was really good with children and everyone loved him so much, " said his wife, Carol. "He visited all the hospitals."
He also volunteered at the Raceway Ministry, a congregation set up in a tent on a campground near the Kentucky Speedway in Sparta.
On Sundays, he would hold a special "children's time" and later would drive the children home -- after treating them all to ice cream at Dairy Queen.
"He could take baseball or flowers or whatever (and) he could turn it around and relate it to the Bible, " said Terry Hopperton, a Warsaw resident and lifelong member of the church.
His wife of 10 years remembered how just this year, he held a birthday party for her and serenaded her with "What a Wonderful Life" -- but changed the last word to "wife."
Rev. Estes was a talented musician who played keyboard, guitar and sang gospel.
His wife also remembered his "dumb jokes."
"He was just happy, " she said. "He was so wonderful."
On Sunday, his ministry of more than 70 will gather, but no pastor will be in the pulpit.
"We felt like out of respect that we couldn't put a pastor in the pulpit at this time, " said Hopperton. "We're gonna get a good pastor later on, but he's never going to be able to replace Brother Tim."
Surviving in addition to his wife are brothers, Mark A. Estes of Louisville and J. Philip Estes of Wilmore; his sister, Ann Katherine Wilkerson of Fayetteville, Ark.; and nieces and nephews.
