Martha Keam, made big impact as teacher
Martha P. Keam had a lifelong commitment to teaching that extended to her own family.
Mrs. Keam, 87, who died Sunday, loved to read to her children and grandchildren and encourage them in their educational pursuits, said her daughter, Deborah Keam Farmer of Vienna, Va.
"She was a wonderful parent and grandparent, " her daughter said.
Mrs. Keam, formerly of Fort Mitchell, taught in the Kenton County public schools for 25 years, including assignments at Caywood Elementary and R.C. Hinsdale Elementary in Edgewood.
She taught in the kindergarten and primary grades, her daughter said, because she thought it important to give young children a good educational foundation.
She was a member of the Immanuel United Methodist Church in Lakeside Park for more than 50 years. She started the kindergarten program there and served as its director. She also played the piano for the church and was involved in women's groups there.
She was a member of Kappa Delta Gamma, a retired teachers' association.
As a lover of words, she never missed a chance to do crossword puzzles and word scrambles in her daily newspaper.
Her husband, Paul E. Keam, preceded her in death in April 1994.
Surviving in addition to her daughter are sons, Peter Thompson Keam of Lexington and Paul Wells Keam of Fort Mitchell; another daughter, Paula Derelle Keam of Sandersville, Ga.; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Immanuel United Methodist Church, 2551 Dixie Highway, Lakeside Park. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Mrs. Keam was cremated.
Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling the arrangements.
Lora Lane Ballinger, 78, of Ocala, Fla., formerly of Covington, died Monday at her residence.
Arrangements are pending at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.
Walter Brown, Sr., 54, of Latonia, died Friday at his residence.
Arrangements are pending at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger.
Willie "Billie" Cornett, 87, of Covington died Monday at Garrard Convalescent Center, Covington.
She was a retired factory worker from Randall Manufacturers and a retired housekeeper from Quality Motel, Covington.
Survivors include a sister, Dorothy Miller of Cincinnati.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Allison & Rose Funeral Home, Covington.
Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Thursday.
Burial will be in Baltimore Pike Cemetery, Cincinnati.
June J. Frey, 54, of Fairfield, Ohio, died Aug. 17 at Tri-City Extended Care, Fairfield, Ohio.
She was an antiques dealer.
Survivors include sons, Matthew Frey and Aaron Frey, both of Lakeside Park; a brother, Ken Jacobson of Villa Park, Ill.; and sisters, Carol Anderson of Naples, Fla., and Sandra Bremer of Richmond, Va.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger.
Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday.
Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Erlanger.

Harriet Belle Fuller, 75, of Augusta, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include sons, Tony Fuller of Alexandria, Timothy Fuller of Butler, Terry Fuller of Augusta, and Thomas Fuller of Falmouth; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Moore & Parker Funeral Home, Augusta.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery, Augusta.
Tony R. Glacken, 22, of Covington, died Saturday in an automobile accident in Carroll County.
He was training to be a firefighter.
Survivors include his father, Donald R. Glacken, Sr., of Covington; his mother, Celeste H. Macke Glacken of Covington; brothers, Donald R. Glacken, Jr., of Cleves, Ohio, and Casey R. Glacken of Covington; and a sister, Stevie Marie Glacken Parks of Covington.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. There is no visitation. Mr. Glacken will be cremated. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Harry George Huelsman, 59, of Highland Heights, died Friday at Lakeside Heights Nursing Home, Highland Heights. He was disabled.
Survivors include a son, Harry Huelsman; a daughter, Robin Lynn Huelsman; a brother, Ralph Huelsman of Florence; and a sister, Louise Weed of Edgewood.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Highland cemetery Chapel, Fort Mitchell. There is no visitation. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling the arrangements.
Harry Rodes Kurtz, 61, of Brooksville, died Monday at his residence. He was a retired machinist from D.C. Morrison, Covington, and a member of McKendree United Methodist Church. His wife, Clydia Jane Parker Kurtz, preceded him in death.
Survivors include a son, Michael R. Kurtz of Covington; a daughter, Cheri Kurtz Heater of Augusta; brothers, David R. Kurtz of Maysville and Rick C. Kurtz of Brooksville; and one grandchild.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Moore & Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Bracken Memorial Cemetery. James E. May, 81, of May's Lick, died Sunday at his residence. He was a carpenter and operated a furniture refinishing and repair shop in May's Lick. He was a member of May's Lick Christian Church and May's Lick volunteer fire department. He also served as director of the May's Lick cemetery Co. His wife, Elizabeth J. "It" May, preceded him in death.
Survivors include a stepdaughter, Wanda Earls of Washington, and a brother, William T. May of Eminence.

Jessie Strong, 20, of Dry Ridge, died Saturday in an automobile accident on Highway 47 near Sanders. He was a welder and machinist with Jero Inc., Florence, and a member of Owen County First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Rachel "Rae Rae" Nichols; a son, Logan Strong of Dry Ridge; his father, David Strong of Crittenden; his mother, Donna Orme Lawson of Sparta; and paternal grandmother, Paula Strong of Crittenden.

Thelma M. Tracy, 86, of Fort Wright, died Sunday at Baptist Village Care Center, Erlanger. She was a homemaker and a member of the Fort Wright Hilltoppers. Her husband, Joseph T. Tracy, and her daughter, Marlene K. Gronotte, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Robert J. Tracy of Erlanger; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Henry Church, Elsmere. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Thursday. Entombment will be in St. Mary Mausoleum, Fort Mitchell. Todd Merle Walton, 43, of Demossville, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was worked at Northern Kentucky University Steely Library, and was a former emergency medical technician, a Marine veteran, and a firefighter with the Piner Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member, Sunday school teacher, and youth leader at Grassy Creek Christian Church, Demossville, and a volunteer at Camp Northward.
Survivors include his wife, Janet Fenhoff Walton; sons, Josh Walton, Jason Reller and Bruce Reller, all of Demossville; a daughter, Paige McFarland of Demossville; his parents, Sherry and Larry Walton of Piner; a sister, Carrie List of Villa Hills; and grandmother, Virginia McKellar of Rose City, Mich.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Grassy Creek Christian Church, Demossville. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Gardnersville Cemetery, Gardnersville. Louis E. Ward, 79, of Ghent, died Friday at University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
He was a farmer, worked part time for the Gallatin County Highway Department, and was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Ghent Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Dora Riley Ward of Ghent; daughters, Rosie Gray of New Jersey and Linda Starks of Ft. Meyers, Fla.; a stepson, Timmy Abbott of Ghent; stepdaughters, Laurie Walls, Doreen Walls, and Donna Ray, all of New Castle, and Tammy Clark of Campbellsburg; a sister, Minnie Wilson of Campbellsburg; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, 12 step-grandchildren, and 2 step-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Warsaw Cemetery.
