Alvin Rinehard, earned accolades in softball
Alvin Rinehard was one of the finest softball players in Northern Kentucky history.
"He was inducted into three sports halls of fame, " said Mr. Rinehard's son, Dale Rinehard of Yukon, Okla. "Newspaper sports columnist Marty Kehoe dubbed him 'Mr. Shortstop.'"
Mr. Rinehard, 83, of Fort Thomas, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.
He was a retired clerk for the J.R. Green Co. of Covington.
Mr. Rinehard is a member of the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame, the Kentucky Softball Association Hall of Fame, and the Hudepohl Greater Cincinnati Softball Hall of Fame.
He began his fast-pitch softball career at 12. At age 16 he was the youngest player chosen for the Campbell-Kenton County All-Star Game. In 1949, Mr. Rinehard and his Sixth Ward Boosters teammates finished fifth in a national tournament.
He batted .315 over his fast-pitch softball career and was an excellent fielding shortstop. He played into his 40s and ended his career pitching in slow-pitch softball for Gatliff Auto Sales, Yorkshire and Shields Realty.
Mr. Rinehard also played baseball for the Martz Cardinals and Wiedemann Beer.
"He got a lot of encouragement from his father, Amos, who also was a very good ballplayer, " said Dale Rinehard.
Mr. Rinehard is also survived by his wife of 61 years, Clara Jean Hart Rinehard.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at noon Thursday. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.
Lena L. Asher, 74, of Newport, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a retired bindery worker from Johnson-Hardin Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Bullittsville Baptist Church.
Survivors include her companion, Kenneth Downward; a sister, Grace Robinson of Cincinnati; a nephew, Gary Robinson of Demossville; and a niece, Joy Kendoll of Carrollton.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
Lora Marie Lane Ballinger, 78, of Ocala, Fla., formerly of Covington, died Monday at her residence. She was a homemaker and a member of Covenant Apostolic Church, Cincinnati. A daughter, Ruth Ann Neal, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, James Lane of Kings Mills, Ohio, Ed Lane of Union, Ron Lane of Cincinnati, Tom Lane of Florence, and Rick Ballinger of Covington; a daughter, Nilie Chaitoff of Ocala, Fla.; a brother, Clayton Hunter of Anchorage, Alaska; 16 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Plainview Cemetery, Newtonsville, Ohio. Melvin C. Dolwick, 81, of Gainesville, Fla., formerly of Hebron, died Monday at Gainesville Health Care Center, Gainesville, Fla. He was a retired mail handler from Union Terminal, Cincinnati. He was a member of Waldo Baptist Church, Waldo, Fla., and Alachula Farmers Market. His wife, Elsie Reichert Dolwick, preceded him in death.
Survivors include a son, Dr. M. Franklin Dolwick of Gainesville, Fla., 2 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Hebron Lutheran Cemetery, Hebron. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 6612 Dixie Highway, Suite 2-A, Florence, Ky. 41042.
Catherine Johnson, 88, of Ludlow, died Tuesday at Hospice of Cincinnati, Blue Ash, Ohio. She was a retired sales clerk from L.S. Ayers Department Store, Cincinnati. She was a member of Ludlow Christian Church and past president of Butterfield Senior Citizens, Cincinnati. Her husband, Edward Johnson, and her son, Daniel Johnson, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Ottie Jones of Blue Ash, Ohio; sisters, Nina Moehring of West Chester, Ohio, and Delores Boaz of Bromley; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will begin there at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Florence Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Cincinnati, 4310 Cooper Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45242.
Austin Lehew, 77, of Latonia, died Tuesday at his residence.

Robin Long, 44, of Independence, died Tuesday at her residence.

Charles L. Norman, 72, of Owenton, died Monday at his residence. He was a retired school bus driver.
Survivors include his sons, Clarence "Gene" Norman of Owenton, William Harold Norman, Lonnie Norman, and David Norman, all of Henderson; daughters, Judy Norman of Owensboro and Mary Eversole of Owenton; a brother, Herbert Rogers of Paris, Tenn.; sisters, Juanita Hanson of Paris, Tenn., and Louise Rose of Clarksville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, three step-grandchildren, and one step-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Thursday. Mr. Norman will be cremated.
Janis Faye Snell, 56, of Hagerstown, Md., died Monday at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown, Md.

Leonard Junior "L.J." Terry, 68, of Covington, died Aug. 19 at his residence.

Jakie Woodall, 68, of Covington, died Monday at his residence. He was a retired engraver with the Bohlender Engraving Co., Cincinnati. His wife, Patsy Woodall, preceded him in death.
Survivors include sons, David Woodall of Alexandria, Daniel Woodall of Cleves, Ohio, and Jack Woodall of Cincinnati; daughters, Janice Nicholson of Southgate, Linda Vann of Vevay, Ind., and Angie Woodall of Florida; a stepson, Wayne Hickman of Cincinnati; a stepdaughter, Carolyn Gayheart of Louisville; sisters, Mary Helton of Newtown, Ohio, Margie Wernsing of Cincinnati, and Geneva Woodall of Houstonville; 21 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
