'Ike' Lehew, proud of his service in WWII
Austin "Ike" Lehew felt for the American soldiers fighting in Iraq.
"Nobody knows until you're away from home what you put up with, " he often said, according to his wife, Opal T. Baugh Lehew.
One of their problems is that they don't know who they're fighting against, he would say.
Mr. Lehew, 77, who died Tuesday at his home in Latonia, knew who he was fighting against when he served in the Army.
The enemy was the Japanese army, and the fight was World War II.
His war service gave him the utmost respect for American soldiers, his wife said.
"He was proud to be in the war and very proud of America, " she said.
After the war, for more than 30 years, Mr. Lehew owned and operated Crickett's Carry-Out, a convenience store on West 10th Street in Newport.
Before that, he worked for the Cincinnati Ventilating Co. in Florence.
He met Opal, his second wife, at a singles' dance at a local Veterans of Foreign Wars post.
He was a member of the VFW Marshall-Schildmeyer Post No. 6095 in Latonia.
When he wasn't working, he liked to take long walks along the Ohio River with his wife, enjoying the scenery and the wildlife.
"He was very much a nature man" and an animal lover, she said.
Mr. Lehew was also a member of Trinity Methodist Church in Latonia.
Other survivors include sons, Mike Lehew of Tigard, Ore., and Mark Lehew of Southgate; a stepson, Chuck Sharpe of Fort Mitchell; a daughter, Lyn Ross of Independence; a brother, Ed Lehew of Independence; a sister, Gloria Shay of Covington; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 12:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Thomas Black, 70, of Florence, died Wednesday at University Hospital, Cincinnati.
He was a self-employed tractor and truck repairman, a member of Petersburg Lodge No. 926 F&AM; and an Air Force veteran.
Survivors include sons, Dwight Black, Darryl Black and Dayman Black, all of Petersburg, and Derek Black of Fort Meyers, Fla.; a daughter, Sandra Scudder of Crittenden; a foster son, Richard Freeman of White Plains, N.M.; a brother, Donald Black of Falmouth; sisters, Mary Rose Darenkamp of Perry Park, Sheryl Mahorney of Taylor Mill and Betty Patton of Coral Gables, Fla.; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Petersburg Cemetery.

John L. Dietz, 80, of Pembroke Pines, Fla., formerly of Covington, died Tuesday at Mercy Franciscan Hospital, Cincinnati.
He was a carpenter with the Miami, Fla., Board of Education and a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include a sister, Mary Julia Gerrein of Highland Heights, and a brother, Joseph C. Dietz of Cincinnati.
Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Friday at Mother of God Church, Covington.
Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Friday.
Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.

Ethel L. Fletcher, 60, of Depeyster, N.Y., formerly of Covington, died at 8:50 p.m. Sunday at her home.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include a daughter, Connie Stewart of Depeyster; sons, Dewayne Cox and Gary Cox, both of Covington, and Terry Cox of Cincinnati; stepsons, James Fletcher Jr. of Florence and Jeffrey Fletcher of Elsmere; her father, Woody Cloud of Polk, Fla.; a brother, Wayne Cloud of Evansville, Ind.; a sister, Jackie Young of Evansville; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Forest Lawn cemetery Chapel, Erlanger.
Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Robin Long Gollar, 45, of Independence, died Tuesday at her home.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Chuck Gollar; sons, Roy Lee Long II of Pontiac, Mich., Brian Gollar and Christian Gollar, both of Covington; a daughter, Dawn Wehrman of Covington; her parents, Elmer and Gladys Hardymon of Crescent Springs; sisters, Penny Barton of Burlington, Carol Grinninger of Fort Thomas, Jill Herrington of Walton, Sherry Hardymon and Tina Hamilton, both of Crescent Springs; a brother, Greg Marksberry of Cincinnati; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.
Visitation will begin there at 11:30 a.m. Friday.

Catherine Johnson, 88, of Ludlow, died Tuesday at Hospice of Cincinnati.
She was a retired sales clerk from L.S. Ayers Department Store, Cincinnati, a member of Ludlow Christian Church and past president of Butterfield Senior Citizens in Cincinnati.
Her husband, Edward Johnson, and her son, Daniel Johnson, both preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Ottie Jones of Pleasant Ridge, Ohio; sisters, Nina Moehring of West Chester, Ohio, and Delores Boaz of Bromley; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 7 tonight at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.
Visitation will begin there at 5:30 p.m.

Leonard Junior "L.J." Terry, 68, of Covington, died Thursday at his home.
He was a retired assembly line worker with Husman Snack Foods Inc., Cincinnati. His wife, Nancy Jane Terry, died in 2003.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington.
Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Friday.

Arthur L. Wagner, 84, of Newport, died at 6:38 p.m. Tuesday at University Hospital, Cincinnati.
He was a retired production worker with Hess & Eisenhardt, Cincinnati, a member of Lawler Hanlon VFW Post No. 5662 in Newport and an Army veteran of World War II.
His wife, Elizabeth Wagner, died in 1956.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Sturdivant of Newport; sons, Michael Wagner, Timothy Wagner and Jim Wagner, all of Newport; a sister, Betty Jones of Newport; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport.
