Patricia Stortz, former Crestview mayor
Patricia Ann Stortz regularly confounded expectations during her life.
A former Crestview mayor, Mrs. Stortz once won a seat on the City Commission as a write-in candidate while she was in her late 60s, the first time in the memories of Campbell County election officials that a write-in candidate defeated those listed on the ballot.
In 1998, while Mrs. Stortz was mayor, she had decided not to seek re-election.
But her strong opposition against Crestview possibly being annexed by another community prompted the feisty senior citizen to change her mind. She campaigned door-to-door for a commission seat, eventually winning the spot by two votes.
"She was very shocked but happy, " said Sherry Fuller, Mrs. Stortz' daughter. "It just reinforced that people appreciated what she had done for the city and her dedication."
Mrs. Stortz, 73, of Crestview, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Edgewood.
She was a homemaker who served as Crestview mayor for six years, and was currently in her 10th year of service as a City Commission member.
Mrs. Stortz also belonged to Melbourne United Methodist Church, and was active in the Brighton Center Senior Group.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George E. Stortz, who died in 1987; and a son, David, a special-needs person who she took care of until his death in 2001.
Mrs. Stortz never drove a car for most of her life, but was determined to get her license after her husband died so she could remain mobile.
"Boy, once she got her license, you couldn't hold her down, " Mrs. Fuller said. "She really got around.
"She was able to do the things she wanted to do. She traveled some and spent time with her friends, " Mrs. Fuller added.
"That's mom. She was very down to earth. She loved her family and she loved what she called her village."
Other survivors include a daughter, Darlene Humphreys of Grant's Lick; a son, George "Butch" Stortz of Melbourne; brothers, Don Greely of Highland Heights, and Larry Greely of Largo, Fla.; and four grandchildren.
Services are at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Melbourne United Methodist Church, with burial at St. Stephen cemetery in Fort Thomas. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Alexandria Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to New Perceptions Inc., 1 Sperti, Edgewood, Ky. 41017.
Dolores Morton, gave 27 years to teaching
Is there a higher compliment?
Dolores Brown Morton was the kind of a person you wanted to have teaching your children, Conner High School Principal Mike Blevins said.
"She was very funny, outgoing and she loved kids, " Blevins said. "That was the greatest thing from a work point of view."
Mrs. Morton, 48, died Wednesday at her home in Union after a 10-year battle with cancer.
"She was a true fighter, " said Johnna Reeder Fasold, who works with Mrs. Morton's husband, Gregg Morton, at Citigroup in Florence. "She was really a joy to be around. She always made everyone feel comfortable, " Fasold said.
A graduate of the University of South Carolina, Mrs. Morton earned a master's degree from Auburn University in eastern Alabama and dedicated 27 years of her life to teaching. She taught English and Spanish at Conner High School from 1995 to 1998, before her illness made it too hard for her to work. She also served as the yearbook sponsor.
She and her husband were high school sweethearts in South Carolina, where they grew up.
Her son, Gregg Morton Jr., a Ryle High School student, was the center of her world, Blevins said. "She would do anything for him, " he said.
