Nellie Walters, single mother, volunteer
Nellie M. Walters reared three children by herself and still found time to help others.
"She always felt an obligation to help others even when she was in a position where others might have helped her, " said her son, Michael A. Walters of Cincinnati.
"Mom had a very strong conscience. She had a moral compass. She wanted to make the world a better place."
Mrs. Walters, 83, of Newport, died Sunday at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati.
She was a retired supervisor for the Internal Revenue Service.
Mrs. Walters was a founding volunteer and later an employee of the Women's Crisis Center of Northern Kentucky.
She was honored with a United Way Volunteer of the Year award.
Mrs. Walters was a tireless volunteer throughout her life for such organizations as the National Treasury Employees' Union and the Campbell County Democratic Women's Club.
She also was a member of the Committee of 500 that helped rid Newport of mobsters.
Mrs. Walters' first husband died in the late 1940s, leaving her to rear two children on her own.
After remarrying, she was divorced in the mid-1960s and reared another child by herself.
"She raised three children as a single mom when there really weren't any accommodations or support systems for single moms, " said her son, who is a lawyer with an office in Fort Thomas.
"She was the kind of person who made friends all the time.
"She was always interested in the world around her, loved to read, and was very active in social causes and politics."
Besides her son, Michael, other survivors include another son, William C. Knapp of Cincinnati; a daughter, Susan B. Davis of Madisonville; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
There will be no services or visitation.

Ruth W. Boyle, 84, of Florence, died Monday at Villaspring Health Care Center, Erlanger.
She was a homemaker, and a member of Florence Christian Church and the church's Christian Women's Fellowship group. Her husband, Herbert Lewis Boyle, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, Bill Boyle of Florence; a daughter, Elizabeth Steinhilber of Taylor Mill; stepbrothers, Jim Murphy of Atlanta and Bill Murphy of Florida; a stepsister, Vivian Thayre of Detroit, Mich.; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Hopeful Lutheran Cemetery, Florence. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075.
Jim Bryson, 48, of Erlanger, died Saturday at his residence.
He was a cab driver.
Survivors include his mother, Faye Reed of Cincinnati; and sisters, Cathy Wescott of Erlanger and Kim Gartell of Cincinnati.
No service or visitation is scheduled. Mr. Bryson will be cremated at Northern Kentucky Crematory, Walton.

John W. Cole, 36, of Newport, died Sunday at Baptist Convalescent Home, Newport.
Survivors include his fiancee, Gina Raleigh of Newport; a son, Hunter Cole of Newport; his father, William Cole of Newport; and brothers, Lonnie Cole, William Cole, and Charles Cole, all of Newport.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.
Rodney J. Coleman, 55, of Lebanon, Ohio, formerly of Erlanger, died Sunday at his residence. He was a maintenance worker with the Fountains Apartment Complex, Lebanon, Ohio, and an Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of Main Street Baptist Church, Alexandria.
Survivors include his wife, Carol Kovacs; his mother, Thelma Hagan Coleman of Erlanger; and a sister, Becky Having of Erlanger.
Services will be at noon Wednesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.

Floyd Cooper, 69, of Latonia, died Sunday at his residence.

Richard Eibeck, 45, of Bedford, formerly of Alexandria, died Saturday at his residence. He was a maintenance worker with Steinhauser, Inc., Newport, and a Marine veteran. He was a member of Dutchman's Rod & Gun Club and Kentucky Motorcycle Association/Kentucky Bikers Association.
Survivors include his wife, Paula Bass Eibeck; and brothers, Larry Eibeck and John Eibeck, both of Morning View, and William Eibeck of Independence.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.
Howard Ehrenfels, 84, of Erlanger, died Friday at St. Charles Nursing Home, Fort Wright.
He was a retired welder from CG&E; and Cincinnati Ventilating Co., and a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of St. Paul Church, Florence, and the American Legion. A son, John Ehrenfels, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Alberta Ehrenfels; sons, James Ehrenfels of Florence and Thomas Ehrenfels of Silver Grove; daughters, Marianne Thalheimer of Cincinnati and Julie Ehrenfels of West Chester, Ohio; five grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul Church, Florence. No visitation is scheduled. Mr. Ehrenfels will be cremated at Fares J. Radel Crematory, Cincinnati.

Christopher Robert Frakes, 11 days, of Florence, died Saturday at his residence.
Survivors include his parents, Robert M. and Shahawna R. Arlinghaus Frakes; paternal grandfather, Timothy Frakes of Anchorage, Alaska; paternal grandmother, Jane Andres of St. Leon, Ind.; maternal grandfather, Thomas Arlinghaus of Edgewood; maternal grandmother, Patricia Arlinghaus of Edgewood; paternal great-grandmother, Betty Frakes of Fort Wright; maternal great-grandfather, Thomas Arlinghaus of Fort Wright; and maternal great-grandmother, Dorothy Arlinghaus of Fort Wright.

Clarice Stahl Fronk, 88, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., formerly of Demossville, died Sunday at Village Care Center in Erlanger.
She was a retired employee of Pan American Airlines and a member of the Hollywood Florida Christian Church. Her husband, Ralph Michael Fronk, preceded her in death.
Survivors include brothers, Herman Stahl of Fort Wayne, Ind., Leo Dale Stahl of Morning View, and Gene Stahl of Demossville; and a sister, Mona Faye Crowley of Fort Mitchell.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will begin there at noon Wednesday. Burial will be in Gardnersville Cemetery, Pendleton County.
Jack L. Hemingway, 83, of Fort Thomas, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
He was a retired maintenance worker for Provident Bank, Cincinnati, and a truck driver for Louis Trauth Dairy Co.
He was member of Fort Thomas Retired Men's Club, St. Thomas Resurrection Choir, St. Thomas 55 Club, Fort Thomas-Southgate Interfaith, St. Mary's Seniors Club, Bellevue Seniors Club, Southgate Seniors, and Melbourne Social Club. He served as secretary, treasurer, and business representative for Milk & Ice Cream Drivers Union, and was past president of the Greater Cincinnati Dairy & Ice Cream Technical Society. His first wife, Rachel Parker Hemingway, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Walerius Hemingway; stepsons, Bob Walerius and Jim Walerius, both of Alexandria, and Bill Walerius of California; a stepdaughter, Sharon Spencer of Crestview; a sister, Dorothy Exterkamp of Independence; and seven step-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Thomas Church, Fort Thomas. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Dwight Edward Menefee, 31, of Edgewood, died Saturday at his residence. He was a maintenance technician for L'Oreal and a member of Eastside Nazarene Church.
Survivors include his wife, Brandi Goins Menefee; a daughter, Kayla Cheyenne Menefee of Edgewood; his parents, Bill & Deborah Menefee of Edgewood; paternal grandmother, Alberta Menefee of Covington; and maternal grandmother, Doris Caddell of Florence.

Charles C. Sheriff, 83, of Dania Beach, Fla., formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Jan. 4 at his residence.

James Eric Smith, 43, of Olive Branch, Miss., formerly of Highland Heights, died Thursday at his residence. He was a production manager at the Marietta Co., Memphis, Tenn.
Survivors include sons, Anthony Smith and Jonathan Smith, both of Highland Heights; his parents, Russell and Leora Smith of Highland Heights; brothers, Russell Smith, Jr., who is stationed in Iraq, and Eddie Smith of Delhi, Ohio; and a sister, Vicki Johnson of Winchester.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Church of the Nazarene, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.
