Virginia Smiley, 91, woman of strong faith
One of the things that Allan Smiley will always remember about his mother is her habit of singing hymns as she worked in the kitchen.
Virginia Thompson Smiley, 91, who died Monday at Madonna Manor Nursing Home in Villa Hills, was a very spiritually minded woman.
"She was a wonderful mother, " said her son, who lives in Cold Spring. "She taught us all in our faith."
She was a parishioner at St. Mary's Church in Alexandria from 1950 until 1978, when she and her family moved to Fort Thomas. Then she attended St. Thomas Church and later St. Joseph Church in Cold Spring.
She loved to read -- mostly religious books -- and she watched religious shows on television until her eyesight got too bad.
Through St. Mary's Church, she was a member of the Legion of Mary. She also belonged to the Secular Franciscans, lay persons who try to live their lives as simply as St. Francis of Assisi did.
That meant never letting material possessions control her life. "When we cleaned out her room yesterday, there was a box of pictures, and that's about it, " her son said.
