Linus M. Schack, 63, liked putting on fairs
Linus M. Schack had probably missed only one Alexandria Fair and Horse Show in his 63 years.
Mr. Schack, who died Sunday at his home in California, really liked the idea of putting on a county fair and having lots of attractions, said his wife, Mary Jane Schack.
He was a quiet person who loved seeing people having a good time, she said.
About 20 years ago, he started working with the fair board, which is formally called the Campbell County Agricultural Society.
A few years later he became a director, then president and later vice president.
He also served on the horse show committee of the Kentucky Association of Fairs and Horses.
Although he never showed horses himself, he went to many shows with his son, Jim Shack, who started showing them about 14 years ago.
Some of his grandchildren show them too.
Mr. Schack drove a concrete truck for LN Concrete Materials in Erlanger for more than 30 years before his retirement in 2002.
A member of Sts. Peter and Paul parish in California, Mr. Schack also belonged to a Catholic benevolence organization, the Catholic Order of Foresters.
He grew up on a farm in the Twelve Mile community and, when he married, he and his wife built a house on the same farm, where they have lived ever since.
Their four children all live within half a mile of them, his wife said.
His survivors include daughters, Jennifer Holtz and Laura Richardson, both of California; sons, Jim Schack and Mike Schack, both of California; a brother, Clarence Schack of California; sisters, Melva Rohe and Lorraine Witschger, both of Cincinnati, Irma Schadler and Evelyn Wolfzorn, both of Alexandria, and Esther Schack of Southgate; and 13 grandchildren.
