V.L. Gebhart, Owenton, operated medical labs
V.L. "Ike" Gebhart of Owenton was a medical technologist, a pilot and a real estate broker. None of them was his most enduring role.
His son, Tom, remembers him more as his first baseball coach and a "truly great guy."
Gebhart used to love to watch Tom from the stands when his son was a baseball and cross-country star for the Beechwood Tigers in the 1970s.
"He was the best guy I ever knew, " said Tom Gebhart. "He was my dad, but he was also the best man at my wedding."
Gebhart, 72, formerly of Lakeside Park, died Wednesday at Central Baptist Hospital, Lexington.
He worked as a lab technologist at the old Booth Hospital in Kenton County before opening Scott Medical Lab in Covington. He later opened Doctors Clinical Labs in Cincinnati and Florence.
"He liked setting the labs up more than running them, " his son said. "He wanted his places to be more friendly and comfortable than the big labs or the hospitals."
Gebhart was a Naval airplane mechanic in the 1950s and became a licensed pilot. He built his own plane, an Aeronica Chief, which he kept in the basement of his Beechwood home and flew occasionally.
Tom Gebhart was fascinated with the plane and finally convinced his father to take him for a ride one day.
"As we were coming in to land in a grass field in Union, a wind shear slammed us into the ground and the plane just folded up, " said Tom. "We walked away from it but it scared me to death."
Gebhart sold the labs and retired 1992 but kept busy selling real estate in Northern Kentucky. He was an avid sports fan who loved watching basketball and going to Spurs games with Tom when he visited him in San Antonio. He was a member of Hebron Lutheran Church. His wife, Mary Catherine Dye Gebhart, preceded him in death.
