Ken Hardymon, a welder who lived life to its fullest

Ken Hardymon was always on the go.

He tap danced, bowled, played cornhole, shot pool, pitched horseshoes, collected coins and played cards.

"He was an active man, " said his daughter, Sherry Hardymon of Crescent Springs. "He was a very busy person. He was always on the go."

Mr. Hardymon, 80, of Crescent Springs, died Monday at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Cincinnati.

He worked 40 years as a welder for the former F.H. Lawson Co. in Cincinnati.

Mr. Hardymon was a member of Crescent Springs Baptist Church and an Army veteran of World War II.

"He loved to tap dance, and he was a very good tap dancer, " said his daughter. "He would dance for anybody. At reunions, we used to have him get up and dance for us. He and his aunt used to tap dance together."

Mr. Hardymon also entertained relatives and friends by making songs by clapping his hands and slapping his legs.

He also was helpful to neighbors.

"He went to the grocery store and mowed the grass for elderly people, " said his daughter. "He took care of his family and his friends."

Other survivors include Mr. Hardymon's 99-year-old mother, Lelia White Hardymon of Burtonville; his wife of 46 years, Gladys Davis Hardymon; a son, Greg Marksberry of Cincinnati; daughters, Carole Grinninger of Fort Thomas, Jill Herrington of Walton, Tina Hamilton of Crescent Springs and Penny Barton of Burlington; a sister, Eyelyn Mullikin of Burtonville; brothers, Charles Hardymon of Burtonville and Wayne Hardymon of Tollesboro; nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Friday at Crescent Springs Baptist Church, 627 Buttermilk Pike.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the church.

Burial will be at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Greater Cincinnati chapter, 644 Linn St., Suite 1026, Cincinnati, Ohio, 45203.

Allison & Rose Funeral Home of Taylor Mill is in charge of arrangements.

Jerry Franklin Craddock, 57, of Covington, died Monday at his home. He worked with Covington Community Action, and was a member of Hardin-Browning Post No. 109 and an Army veteran.

Survivors include a daughter, Monica Jean Hamm of Cynthiana; sons, Jerry Wade Craddock and Timothy Wayne Craddock, both of Cynthiana; sisters, Freida Perkins, Alta Hamilton, Betty Hodge and Connie Craddock, all of Falmouth; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will begin there at noon. Burial will be in Concord Cemetery, Pendleton County. Memorials are suggested to Chapel of Praise Building Fund, 1562 Highway 159 North, Falmouth, Ky. 41040.

Jeffrey Lee Harris, 46, of Alexandria, died Tuesday at his home. He was an employee of Doran Manufacturing Co., Cincinnati, and a former supervisor with the Gibson Greeting Card Co. He was a coach with the Kenton County Knothole League from 1981-89.

Survivors include his wife, Cheryl Harris; a son, Drew Harris of Alexandria; his parents, Leamon and Margaret Harris of Highland Heights; and sisters, May Moore of Highland Heights and Helen Stevens of Bellevue.

Services will be private. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Highland Heights. Memorials are suggested to Walter Payton Cancer Fund, 3150 Salt Creek Lane, Suite 118, Arlington Heights, Ill. 60005.

Viola Mannig Heath, 90, of Ballwin, Mo., formerly of Newport, died at 8:36 a.m. Tuesday at her home. She was a retired beautician with Vi's Beauty Shop in Covington, and a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, the Kentucky Historical Society and Licking Valley Quilters. Her husband, Robert Heath, died in 1974. A daughter, Yvonne Conover, died in 2002.

Survivors include a daughter, Roberta Gonzalez of Palmdale, Calif.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Saturday. Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

Brayden Jacob Hoffman, the son of Mark N. and Gina Hoffman of Taylor Mill, was stillborn at 4:06 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

Other survivors include a sister, Abbey S. Hoffman of Taylor Mill; grandparents, Mark A. and Susan Hoffman, and Melvin and Susan Downey, all of Independence; and great-grandmother, Diane Bickers of Erlanger.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today at Independence Cemetery. Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.

Sydney Lippert, the daughter of Joe and Tracy Lippert of Alexandria, was stillborn Tuesday at Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati.

Other survivors include a brother, Jacob Lippert of Alexandria; and grandparents, Harold and Peggy Kramer of Alexandria and Cheryl Krift of Alexandria.

Services will be private. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Alexandria. Memorials are suggested to Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation, 375 Dixmyth Ave., Cincinnati, Ohio 45220. Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick, is handling arrangements.

Welburn Reese Monahon, 95, of Germantown, died Tuesday at Veterans Administration Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a farmer and an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Monahon.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Palmer Funeral Home, Germantown. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Germantown. Memorials are suggested to Germantown Christian Church, 81 Bridgeville Road, Germantown, Ky. 41044.

Dorothy H. Noble, 92, of Altamonte Springs, Fla., died Tuesday at Central Florida Regional Hospital, Sanford, Fla. She was a homemaker. Her husband, John Anthony Noble Jr., and a son, John Anthony Noble III, both preceded her in death.

Survivors include sisters, Jean Borchers of Hudson, Fla., and Joyce McClurg of Park Hills.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Forest Lawn Mausoleum Chapel, Erlanger. Entombment will be in Forest Lawn Mausoleum. Stith Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.

Gary Sherlock, 37, of Bracken County, died Monday at his home. He was a wastewater technician with Sara Lee, Claryville, and a member of the Southern Campbell County Fire Department and Alexandria United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Sherana Sherlock; daughters, Lauren Cummins and Karly Brooke Sherlock, both of Foster; a son, Branden Cummins of Foster; his mother, Teri Hill of Alexandria; sisters, Sandra Rekers and Kimberly Born, both of Alexandria; and a brother, Scott "Andy" Sherlock of Alexandria.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Saturday at 1986 Lenoxburg-Foster Road in Foster. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Burial will be in Sherlock Family Cemetery, Foster.

Mark Smeal, 37, of Covington, died at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at his home.

Survivors include sisters, Beverly Rice of Covington, Debbie Berry of Newport and Linda Young of Sanderson, Fla.; and a brother, John Smeal of Warsaw.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. C&C; Mortuary Service, Covington, is handling arrangements.

A. Josephine Lea Steenken, 83, of Villa Hills, died at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a retired assembler with Continental Electric Co., Florence, and an Army veteran of World War II. Her husband, Herman A. Steenken, died in 1996.

Survivors include daughters, Carol Reynolds of Oklahoma City and Marlene Steenken of Covington; sons, Ronald Steenken of Stillman Valley, Ill., and David Steenken of Florence; sisters, Mary Catherine Shull of Richmond, Ind., Faustina Newman of Hebron and Opal Lea of Latonia; five grandchildren and a great-grandson.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Entombment will be in St. John Mausoleum, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Patricia L. Volpenhein, 29, of Covington, was found dead Sunday near River Road in Hebron. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include a son, Justus Michael Lee Turner of Covington; her parents, Michael Volpenhein of Covington and Joseph Volpenhein of Ludlow; and sisters, Sue Ann Davidson of Bradenton, Fla., and Helena Rowland of Covington.

Services will be at noon Friday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to Patricia Volpenhein Trust Fund, in care of U.S. Bank, 602 Madison Ave., Covington, Ky. 41011.

Betty Wilson, 86, of Erlanger, died at 12:05 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of Erlanger Christian Church. Her husband, Charles Harold Wilson, died in 1989. A son, John David Wilson, died in 1984.

Survivors include a son, James C. Wilson of Cincinnati; a daughter, Lynn Edwards of Erlanger; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11:15 a.m. Saturday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger.

Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.
