Mary Ann Rechtin, 87, teacher, civil servant
All six of Mary Ann Krieg Rechtin's children have college degrees, and most of them advanced ones.
Her daughter, Mary C. Boyd of Cincinnati, who has a doctorate in psychology, credits her mother with passing on her love of learning.
"She was a very determined woman, " Boyd said. "She expected a lot of her kids, but she brought us a lot. She was a very bright woman. She was before her time."
Mrs. Rechtin, 87, who died Wednesday at St. Charles Care Center in Covington, got her love of learning from the nuns of Notre Dame Academy and Villa Madonna College, where she went to school.
She had considered becoming a nun herself, but instead started a teaching career at St. James School in Ludlow, then became an assistant principal at Holy Cross in Latonia.
During World War II, she worked as a civil servant at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton. She traveled around the country, dispatching airline parts around the world.
She wanted to continue her education, but like most women of the time, was told she ought to get married
and raise a family instead.
After the war, she did that, marrying Raymond George Rechtin. She became a Girl Scout leader, a den mother, a member of the choir at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Fort Thomas and president of the church mother's club.
She aspired to become a writer, but never became one. She did prove invaluable to her daughter as an editor, however.
She returned to teaching in the late 1960s at St. Thomas High School in Fort Thomas, then at St. Stephen in Newport. When she was 67, she received her master's degree from Northern Kentucky University.
