Edwin Hook, helping others 'in his blood'
Edwin John Hook spent 37 years as a volunteer for the Taylor Mill Fire Department and Life Squad.
"It got in his blood, " said Mr. Hook's brother, Robert Hook of Taylor Mill.
"Once he started helping people, he wanted to keep on helping people."
Mr. Hook, 73, of Taylor Mill, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence.
He was the owner and operator of the former Holian Hardware store in Latonia for 40 years.
Mr. Hook began volunteering with the fire department when it started in 1960.
He took first-aid courses and became captain of the life squad.
He was chief of the fire department from 1965 to 1974.
After retiring as chief, he continued to serve on the life squad through 1997.
In addition to operating a hardware store, Mr. Hook also repaired televisions.
"He was very friendly and very helpful, with a lot of friends, " said his brother.
Mr. Hook's hobby was cooking.
"He loved to cook, " said his brother. "When he retired, he did all the cooking around the house."
Other survivors include Mr. Hook's wife, Mary Beverly Hook; a son, Christopher Hook of Taylor Mill; a daughter, Sharon Hook of Cincinnati; and a grandson.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.
Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday.
Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Ada Allender Bishop, 84, of Butler, died Sunday at her home.
She was a retired employee of Falmouth Sewing Factory and Dr. Scholl's in Falmouth and a member of Flagg Springs Baptist Church, Campbell County.
Her husband, Raymond Bishop, died in 1989.
Survivors include a daughter, Kay Hamilton; seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and a great-grandson.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth.
Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Wednesday.
Burial will be in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Pendleton County.

Gertie Frakes, 86, of Independence, died Friday at her home.
She was a homemaker and a member of Nicholson Christian Church. Her husband, Edward Frakes, died in 1976.
Survivors include a son, Rick Frakes of Independence; a daughter, Joan Rouse of Independence; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.
Mary Louise Osborne Gould, 76, of Warsaw, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
She was a homemaker and a member of Warsaw Baptist Church. Her husband, Robert Gould, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Jim Gould of Ghent, Larry Gould and Donnie Gould, both of Warsaw; daughters, Delores Craig of Sparta, Peggy Gould and Edie Alexander, both of Warsaw; a sister, Aileen Chipman of Warsaw; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Burial will be in Warsaw Cemetery.

Joshua George Helfrich, 10, of Erlanger, died Friday at Children's Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati.
He was a fifth-grader at R.C. Hinsdale Elementary School in Edgewood and a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church, Lakeside Park.
He was a member of Cub Scout Pack No. 236, Den. No. 12, a member of the community basketball team and the Quick Recall Team at his school.
He was a participant in the Governor's Cup, Odyssey of the Mind, the Student Technology Leadership program and Camp Invention and was a volunteer with the Interfaith Hospitality Network.
Survivors include his parents, Ann and Mark Helfrich; a sister, Alicia Helfrich, at home; and grandparents, Barbara and Burl Davis of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Stewart and Linda Helfrich of Allentown, Pa.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immanuel United Methodist Church.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger.
Cremation will be at Northern Kentucky Crematory, Walton.

Etheleen Huber O'Neill, 96, of Minerva, died at 12:55 a.m. Friday at Mayfair Manor, Lexington.
She was owner of a service station in Minerva and a member of St. James Church, Minerva.
Her husband, Eugene L. O'Neill, died in 1980.
Survivors include a son, Dr. James E. O'Neill of Lexington; a sister, Thelma Weaver of Maysville; and a grandson.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. James Church, Minerva.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at Brell and Son Funeral Home, Maysville.
Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, Maysville.
Mary Andrea "Andy" Seiter, 50, of Covington, died Wednesday at her home.
She was an employee of Christ Hospital, Cincinnati.
Survivors include her mother and stepfather, M.L. Joyce and Gene E. Bessler of Crestview Hills; brothers, Ted Seiter, Tim Seiter and Tom Seiter, all of Florence, and Terry Seiter of Burlington; a half-brother, Michael Bessler of Union; stepsisters, Barbara Gebauer of Deforest, Wis., Ann Pratt of Worthington, Ohio, and Julie Trenkamp of Hebron; and a stepbrother, Vince Bessler of Hebron.

Charles Stephenson, 61, of Crittenden, died Saturday at his home.
He was a Kentucky Highway Department worker and a member of Crittenden Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Stephenson; a son, Charles Stephenson of Williamstown; a daughter, Tammy Hornsby of Crittenden; stepdaughters, Tonya Young and Debbie Miller, both of Crittenden; brothers, Wayne Stephenson and Jerry Stephenson, both of Crittenden, and Rick Stephenson of Burlington; sisters, Peggy Ashcraft of Crittenden, Carolyn Swigert of Owenton and Marion Hall of Connersville, Ind.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

James E. Tackett, 47, of Tollesboro, Friday at Fleming County Hospital, Flemingsburg.
He was an heavy equipment operator and construction worker.
Survivors include his wife, Christal Tackett; his mother, Georgia Ruth Tackett of Maysville; sisters, Mary Fischer of Ewing, Bonnie Green of Warsaw, Brenda Crosser of Elgin and Ida Minor of Chatsworth, Ga.; and brothers, Roy Allen Tackett of Fleming County, David Wayne Tackett of Tulsa, Okla., and Bobby Glenn Tackett of Ewing.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Brell and Son Funeral Home, Maysville.
Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m.
Burial will be in Bethel Church Cemetery, Ribolt.
