Lillian Davis, adored her close-knit family
Lillian Marie Schlenker Davis loved her family more than anything.
The fact that nearly all of her seven children have stayed for much of their adult lives on the family's original 300-acre Richwood homestead is a testament of her devotion, said son Dennis Davis of Richwood.
"Her family was her life, " he said. "She was a wonderful person and a wonderful mother."
Mrs. Davis died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical South in Edgewood, leaving behind a family that includes 22 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. She was 85.
She loved following her grandchildren's sporting activities and was skilled at keeping the family closely knit, said Dennis Davis.
"Her biggest disappointment was not being able to follow her 16-year-old grandson's baseball season, " he said.
Her second love was the Boone County Women's Democratic Club, which she co-founded with Ruby Wood nearly 30 years ago. She served as president, vice-president and treasurer.
"She was kind of innovative, " Dennis Davis said, pointing out that female political organizations were not very common when his mother started the club.
The organization raised money for local Democrats and supported the then-mostly male Boone County Democratic Party.
In more recent years, she spent much of her time bowling, playing bingo and knitting and crocheting special gifts.
She also enjoyed Cincinnati Reds baseball and Kentucky Wildcats sports.
"We thought she'd be here another 20 years, " Dennis Davis said.
Mrs. Davis also worked as a bookkeeper for the family business, the Northern Kentucky Plating Company, and sold Stanley Home Products.
"She did everything to keep the family together, " said Dennis Davis.
Her favorite time of the year was Christmas, he said, when the entire family would cram into her house and eat city chicken, a combination of pork and veal on a stick.
It might have also had something to do with the fact that her wedding anniversary followed on Dec. 30. She would have been married
65 years this year.
Surviving in addition to her son are her husband, Lewis Davis; sons, Richard Davis and Donald Davis, both of Union, and Daryl Davis, of Richwood; daughters, Debbie Collins of Richwood and Darlene Noonan of Williamsburg, Va.; 22 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
