Jack Klein, vet, active in community
Right after World War II, Jack W. Klein worked at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, giving orders to Chuck Yeager and other test pilots.
Mr. Klein, who died Monday at age 87, won many medals during his service with the Army Air Corps in the war.
Inspired by watching an air show, he enlisted just before the war started, and went to Eastern Kentucky University for officer's training school.
After graduation, he piloted fighter planes over New Guinea, and was shot down twice, once over the ocean, said his daughter, Dorinda Giles of Cold Spring.
He earned a Purple Heart, and left the service in 1946 after reaching the rank of major.
Mr. Klein continued his military associations, however.
He was proud of his work with the Bellevue Veterans, and once held the office of president.
He graduated from Bellevue High School, where he lettered in baseball, football, swimming and basketball.
Later, he would become chairman of the Bellevue school board.
He won re-election to the board as a write-in candidate.
Mr. Klein formerly operated the B&J; Bowl bowling alley in Bellevue.
Later, he sold land and was a real estate broker.
He was a member of the Henry Barnes Masonic Lodge No. 607 in Dayton and Scottish Rite of Northern Kentucky.
"He had a great sense of humor, " said his son, Dale Klein of Edgewood.
"He was a lot of fun to be around. His house was filled with grandchildren all the time."
His wife of 63 years, Elizabeth "Bette" Klein, preceded him in death by only a few months.
Other survivors include daughters, Deborah Hanessian of Cincinnati and Diane Wilburn of Independence; a son, David Klein of Key West, Fla.; 11 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at A.C. Dobbling and Son Funeral Home, Bellevue.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Emma Florence Broumas, 86, Louisville, formerly of Carrollton, died Tuesday at Summerfield Health Care Center in Louisville.
She was a homemaker and a member of Parkview United Methodist Church.
Two daughters, Mary Broumas and Mable Ayler, preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, George Broumas; daughters, Alexis McClellan of Louisville, Lisa Lawson of Macon, Ga., and Denise Huet of Atlanta; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton.
Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Carrollton.
Stella T. Menendez, 93, of Erlanger, died Wednesday at Village Care Center, Erlanger.
She was a supervisor with General Telephone.
Survivors include a son, Tristan Jimenez of Erlanger; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Henry Church, Elsmere.
Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Dorothy Ann Morris, 84, of Lake City, Fla., formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Friday at Still Waters Assisted Living Center, Lake City. She was a member of Dunes Women's Golf Association, Jacksonville, Fla.
Survivors include a son, Dr. Jerry L. Morris of Orange, Calif.; a daughter, Donna Sue Sawyer of Lake City, Fla.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Private services will be at the convenience of the family.
Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.

Ruth N. Johnson Schonecker, 88, of Grapevine, Texas, formerly of Covington, died Sunday at North Hills Hospital in Grapevine.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.
Her husband, Thomas E. Schonecker, died in 1996.
A daughter, Sandra J. Schonecker, died in 1979.
Survivors include a son, Thomas E. Schonecker of Covington; a sister, Helen J. Cameron of Grapevine; two grandsons and a great-granddaughter.
Services will be at the convenience of the family.
Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
