Donna Ryan, always remembered holidays

Donna Ryan was passionate about the little things.

She would make lists, remember birthdays, create scrapbooks for her three children and decorate for every holiday.

"If you didn't know what season it was, all you had to do was drop into our house, " said her husband Michael Ryan.

Mrs. Ryan, 55, of Edgewood, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Her desire to stay festive throughout the year inspired her husband and daughter, Anna Ryan, to buy pumpkins and straw and decorate the house this weekend.

Mrs. Ryan was a media specialist with Seton High School, Cincinnati, and a former employee of Covington Catholic High School. She also was a track and field official.

Her husband said she got involved with track when their daughter was in high school.

"And then we really never got out of it, " he said.

Mrs. Ryan helped keep score and developed the system coaches use to register athletes for the different events.

"She was very organized and a very good instructor, " he said. "She could explain things very well."

Mrs. Ryan also was a member of St. Barbara Church in Erlanger, and the Catholic and Cincinnati librarians associations.

In addition to her husband and daughter, survivors include sons, Bradley Ryan of Covington and Douglas Ryan of Latonia; her parents, Leonard and Ruth Bornhorst of Edgewood; a brother, Gary Bornhorst of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a granddaughter.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Barbara Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to St. Barbara Church, 4042 Turkeyfoot Road, Erlanger, Ky. 41018.

Naomi L. Anderson, 83, of Ewing, died Friday at Robertson County Health Care Center, Mount Olivet. She was a retired employee of Comprehend Mental Health Center and a former employee of Blue Licks State Park. She was a member of Piqua Methodist Church. Husbands, Chester Martin and John William Anderson, both preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters, Donna Parsons and Sharla Baker, both of Aberdeen, Ohio, and Jonnye Lynn Whisman of Nicholas County; a brother, John William Kimberling Jr. of Robertson County; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Robertson County Funeral Home, Mount Olivet. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer's Disease Association, 644 Linn St., Suite 1026, Cincinnati, Ohio 45203; or Hospice of Hope, 909 Kenton Station Drive, Maysville, Ky. 41056.

Alice Jane Wallace Ayers, 91, of Warsaw, died Friday at her home. She was a baker. Her husband, Cecil Ayres Sr., and sons, Cecil Ayres Jr. and Joe Ayres, all preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters, Garnetta Klaas of Glencoe, Anna Sue Gunkel of Verona and Maudie Wilson of Florence; a son, Charles Ayres of Edgewood; a brother, Henry Wallace of Fort Wright; a sister, Susie Skirvin of Glencoe; 18 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Wilma Sherry Deckard, 62, of Worthville, died Saturday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, Carrollton. She was a homemaker and a member of Whites Run Baptist Church, and the Alexandria American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Her husband, Jerry Deckard, died in 1999.

Survivors include sons, Jeff Beach, Larry Beach and Barry Beach, all of Carrollton; stepdaughters, Patty Callis and Pam Bay, both of Bloomington, Ind.; stepsons, David Deckard of Bloomington and Danny Deckard of Nashville, Ind.; sisters, Mary Lou Craig of Turners Station and Linda Luhn of Versailles, Ind.; brothers, Jimmy Chandler of Worthville and Charlie Chandler of Gas City, Ind.; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Carrollton.

John "Jerry" Durstock, 74, of Lakeside Park, died at 9:30 p.m. Friday at his home. He was a retired engineer technician with the Kentucky Department of Transportation, a bartender with Summit Hills Country Club and a member of St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Katherine Webster Durstock; daughters, Linda Byrley of Taylor Mill, Mary Lou Aldridge of Erlanger, and Joyce Durstock, Jerri Fussinger and Traci Doellman, all of Florence; a brother, Bernard Durstock of Lady Lake, Fla.; and eight grandchildren.

Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to St. Walburg Convent Infirmary, 2500 Amsterdam Road, Villa Hills, Ky. 41017. Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.

Russell "Scotty" Friend, 71, of Union, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a mechanical engineer and a Navy veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Verol Marlene Marksberry Friend, and a daughter, Joyce Pinson.

Services were this morning at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw.

Michael Vincent Gullion, 28, of Corinth, died at 12:20 p.m. Friday at University Medical Center, Lexington. He was an employee of Accu-Staff, a student at Lexington Community College and a member of Oakland Baptist Church, Glencoe.

Survivors include a son, Bryce Tye Gullion of Louisville; his parents, Thomas L. and Kathy Wright Gullion of Corinth; a brother, Thomas L. Gullion of Harrodsburg; and grandmothers, Virginia Maddox Gullion of Warsaw and Edith Wright of Corinth.

Services will be at 3 p.m. today at Oakland Baptist Church, Glencoe. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Oakland Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Bryce Tye Gullion Educational Fund, 3195 Baker-Williams Road, Corinth, Ky. 41010. Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown, is handling arrangements.

Alta L. Hickey, 81, of Blanchester, Ohio, died Saturday in Dalles, Ore.

Arrangements are pending at Peoples Funeral Home, Grants Lick.

EJ Hurst, 68, of Newport, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired real estate broker, a member of Flour Creek Christian Church and an Air Force veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars.

Survivors include his wife, Aileen Tucker Hurst; sons, EJ Hurst II of Lexington and Jeff Hurst of Newport; a brother, Harold Hurst of North Carolina; and a sister, Doris Neal of Michigan.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today at Butler Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth, is handling arrangements.

Martha Mudge Korb, 80, of Winchester, formerly of Covington, died at 10:50 a.m. Friday at Hospice Care Center, St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington. She was a homemaker and a member of Winchester Seventh Day Adventist Church. Her husband, Samuel M. Korb Jr., died in 2001.

Survivors include a son, Thomas E. Korb Sr. of Winchester; a brother, Melvin Patman Mudge of Jacksonville, Fla.; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at noon Tuesday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Margaret M. Kramer, 91, of Alexandria, died at 4:20 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Mary Seniors. Her husband, Ben Kramer, died in 1990.

Survivors include sons, Don Kramer of Morning View, Ed Kramer of Sun Valley, Gary Kramer of Grants Lick, and Dennis Kramer, Harold Kramer, Jerry Kramer, Leroy Kramer and Norb Kramer, all of Alexandria; daughters, Mary Kay Parnell of Loveland, Ohio, and Janet Verst of Alexandria; a sister, Catherine Steffen of Alexandria; 43 grandchildren and 78 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Church, Alexandria. Visitation will begin there at 3 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Alexandria. Memorials are suggested to St. Mary Church, 121 W. Main St., Alexandria, Ky. 41001. Alexandria Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Anna Laura Krismer, 90, of Crestview Hills, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a sales clerk with McAlpin's department stores and a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Lakeside Park. Husbands, Charles Behle and Albert Krismer, both preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons, Mike Behle of Louisville and Nick Behle of Elsmere; a daughter, Barbara Ramsey of San Antonio; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer's Disease Association, 644 Linn St., Suite 1026, Cincinnati, Ohio 45203.

Daryl Derrick Ledbetter, 49, of Bromley, died Friday at his home. He was a maintenance worker with the Internal Revenue Service in Covington, a member of the Ludlow High School Sports Hall and Fame and Ludlow Vets. He was a Navy veteran.

Survivors include his parents, Carl and Jane Laney Ledbetter of Ludlow; a sister, Pam Wright of Ludlow; and a brother, Carl Ledbetter of Ludlow.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. James J. Maher, 74, of Fort Myers, Fla., formerly of Ludlow, died at 10 p.m. Friday at his home. He was a retired engineer with Norfolk-Southern Railroad, and a member of Sts. Boniface and James Church, Ludlow, the Ludlow Vets and St. Columbkille Church, Fort Myers. He was a Navy veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Iva S. Ball Maher; a daughter, Barbara Osborne of Villa Hills; a son, Michael J. Maher of Walton; and two grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Sts. Boniface and James Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Ludlow. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Dorothy Mae McClanahan, 73, of Covington, died at 10:38 p.m. Saturday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence. She was a homemaker. Daughters, Patricia Wagner and Rosemary Barnes, and a son, John Barnes, all preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons, Gerald T. Barnes of Burlington and William T. Barnes of Highland Heights; a daughter, Debra Willen of Covington; a brother, Jack Powell of Carrollton; a sister, Martha Simms of Sparta; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to American Diabetes Association, 8899 Brookside Ave., West Chester, Ohio 45069.

Evelyn Groger Oliver, 76, of Cincinnati, formerly of Erlanger, died Friday at Mount Crest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Raymond Oliver, preceded her in death.

Survivors include a brother, William J. Groger of Cincinnati.

Services will be at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Marianne Gaukel Sandfoss, 72, of Bellevue, died Friday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker and a member of Sacred Heart Church, Bellevue. She worked at Rose's Whitehouse Deli in Bellevue, was a past president of the Sacred Heart School PTA and Mothers Club, and was a member of the Altar Society at Sacred Heart Church.

Survivors include her husband, Luke H. Sandfoss; sons, Steve Sandfoss of Cincinnati and Dave Sandfoss of Erlanger; daughters, Sandy Summe of Cincinnati, Debbie Sandfoss and Donna Walters, both of Bellevue; brothers, Ken Gaukel of Highland Heights, Robert Gaukel of Fort Mitchell and Gerald Gaukel of Covington; sisters, Patricia Grzanke of Cincinnati and Lorraine Perry of Cold Spring; and four grandchildren.

Loyel Andrew "Andy" Sears, 57, of Owenton, died Friday at his home. He was an electrician with Bluegrass Electrical Consultants and a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, James Andrew Sears of Oak Grove; a daughter, Christina Hearn Hensley of Owenton; brothers, William A. Sears, Lee Edd Sears and Henry H. Sears, all of Williamsburg; a sister, Rosie Logan Sears of Berea; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Croley Funeral Home, Williamsburg. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 tonight at McDonald and New Funeral Home, Main Street, Owenton, and from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Croley Funeral Home. Burial will be in Partin Cemetery. Richard Lee Secrist, 44, of Southgate, died Wednesday at his home. He was harbor master with Mike Fink's Restaurant in Covington.

Survivors include his father, Lee Pangburn of Alexandria; his mother and stepfather, Judy Venneman Secrist Brown and Charles Brown of Fort Thomas; a sister, Kelly Secrist of Fort Thomas; and brothers, Jeff Secrist of Cold Spring and Gary Secrist of McCallister, Okla.

Services will be at 7:30 tonight at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to St. Therese School, 2516 Alexandria Pike, Southgate, Ky. 41071.

Lona Smith, 86, of Independence, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Lawrence Smith, died in 1967.

Survivors include daughters, Joan Irvin of Erlanger, Charlotte Smith of Decatur, Ala., Yvonne Stone of Latonia, Donna Young of Independence and Connie Siple of Dayton, Texas; a son, Bob Smith of Troy, Ohio; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Wednesday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.

Harold B. Sterneberg, 84, of Ryland, died at 6:30 a.m. Thursday at Highlands of Fort Thomas nursing home. He was a retired vice president and an owner of Bahrs Die and Stamping Co. Inc., Cincinnati, a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church and Ryland Lakes Country Club, and a volunteer with Action Ministries, Methodist Men and the Ryland Heights Fire Board. He played football and basketball at the University of Cincinnati and was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Mary I. Cortright Sterneberg; sons, John C. Sterneberg of Loveland, Ohio, and Dr. Steven B. Sterneberg of Ryland; daughters, Sally A. Kunkel and Sue J. Dawkins, both of Ryland; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, Ryland. A reception will follow at Ryland Lakes Country Club. Mr. Sterneberg bequeathed his body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Memorials are suggested to Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, 10283 Decoursey Pike, Ryland, Ky. 41015 or to Action Ministries, 8276 Decoursey Pike, Fairview, Ky. 41015. Marie Elizabeth Bishoff Traylor, 91, of Independence, died Saturday at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Cecilia Church, Independence. Her first husband, Theodore Sullivan, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband, Donald Traylor; and stepsons, James Kannady of Walton, and Bob Kannady and David Kannady, both of Independence.

Services will be at noon Tuesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.
