Richard Fritsche, enjoyed woodworking, photography
Richard K. Fritsche could build just about anything he saw in a catalog, and usually do it better.
He was an accomplished woodworker and craftsman who enjoyed constructing furniture, cabinetry and intricate model airplanes and boats, said his daughter, Christina J. Fritsche, of Cincinnati.
Mr. Fritsche, 84, of Fort Thomas, died Wednesday at Highlands of Fort Thomas.
Christina Fritsche said she especially liked a 1955 model Chris-Craft Cobra he built for a Fort Thomas friend.
"It's just unbelievable somebody could make something like this with their hands, " she said.
Mr. Fritsche also enjoyed collaborating with her on seashell-decorated lamps they entered into a shell fair competition every year in Sanibel Island, Fla., his daughter said. He would build the lamps and she would glue the shells.
"It got to be a kind of fun father-daughter thing down there, " she said.
She described her dad as a modest person, even when people gushed over his woodworking talents and his youthful appearance.
"He always accepted those compliments graciously and modestly, " she said.
He also was generous to friends and family, offering to help when someone moved into a new home or needed something fixed.
In addition to woodworking, Mr. Fritsche enjoyed photography, history and being near the water.
He was a corporate engineer retired from Miami Margarine Corp., a member of Highland United Methodist Church in Fort Thomas and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
In addition to his daughter, survivors include his wife, Audrey Palmer Fritsche; a son, Randall P. Fritsche of Fort Thomas; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at A.C. Dobbling and Son Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Harold J. Baynum, 82, of California, died at 10:34 a.m. Wednesday at Carmel Manor Nursing Home, Fort Thomas. He was a retired line foreman with Wiedeman Brewery in Newport, and a member of Disabled American Veterans in Cold Spring, Knights of Columbus Father DeJaco Council in Alexandria and Campbell County VFW Post No. 3205, Alexandria. A son, Robert Baynum, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Clara Baynum; sons, Jim Baynum of Alexandria, Mike Baynum and Tim Baynum, both of California, and Ron Baynum of Edgewood; daughters, Sandy Bezold of California, Kathy Neises of Camp Springs and Pat Schultz of Williamstown; brothers, Ernest Baynum of Cold Spring and Vernon Baynum of Fort Thomas; a sister, Bernie Colyer of Estro, Fla.; 24 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Sts. Peter and Paul Church, California. Visitation will begin there at 3 p.m. Monday. Memorials are suggested to Sts. Peter and Paul Building Fund, 2162 California Cross Road, California, Ky. 41007. Alexandria Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Charles J. Costello, 90, of Villa Hills, died at 6:32 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired crane operator with G.A. Gray Co. in Norwood, Ohio, and a member of St. Augustine Church, Covington. He was a eucharistic minister and member of Legion of Mary at the church, and was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include a sister, Dorothy Marie Ficke of Latonia.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Madonna Manor, Villa Hills. Visitation will begin there at 10:30 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Sister Teresa Herbert, R.G.S., 95, of Fort Thomas, died Tuesday at Sisters of the Good Shepherd Pelletier Hall, Fort Thomas. She was a seamstress and altar bread maker with the order.
Survivors include a niece, Janice Britt of Wapakoneta, Ohio.

Thomas Joseph Huesman Sr., 68, of Anderson Township, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Dolores of Cincinnati; four daughters, Pam, Donna, Jane and Amy; two sons, Tommy and Michael and three grandchildren, Nicholas, Jessica and Graydon.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 12:05 p.m. Friday at Mother of God Church, Covington, Ky. There is no visitation. Memorials: American Heart Association, 2936 Vernon Place, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219.
Mary R. LaVelle, 97, of Covington, died Tuesday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington. She was a seamstress and a member of Mother of God Church, Covington. She was a member of the Legion of Mary and a volunteer with the church, and was a Girl Scouts leader. Her husband, James W. LaVelle Sr., died in 1974. Sons, James W. LaVelle Jr. (1998) and John C. "Jack" LaVelle (2003), also preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Rose Tumulty of Richmond, Va., and Joan Burkhardt of Covington; a son, Edward J. "Jerry" LaVelle of Denver; 18 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Susan C. Mangel, 61, of Independence, died at 12:45 a.m. Wednesday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a consultant with Mary Kay Cosmetics and a member of St. Cecilia Church, Independence.
Survivors include her husband, Jim Mangel; a son, Gregg Mangel of Dry ridge; a daughter, Michelle Mangel of Independence; sisters, Margie Manausa of Lakeside Park and Nancy Brunk of Villa Hills; and two grandchildren.

Joseph Thomas Santini, 58, of Highland Heights, died Tuesday at Jewish Hospital Kenwood, Cincinnati. He was a driver with the Transit Authority of Northern Kentucky and an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his wife, Jackie Santini; daughters, Melanie Maddox of Erlanger and Amy Santini of Alexandria; brothers, Francis Roach of Cold Spring, Salvatore Santini of Bellevue, Pasquale Santini of Dayton, Ohio, Frank Santini of Erlanger and John Santini of Newport; sisters, Joyce Mardis and Angela Menninger, both of Newport, Theresa Santini and Patricia Owens, both of Highland Heights, and Antoinette Howard of Port Charlotte, Fla.; and a grandchild.

Carole J. Current Schmerge, 62, of Erlanger, died at 1:11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker. A son, Paul Gene Current, died in 1977.
Survivors include her husband, Arthur P. Schmerge; sons, Dennis E. Current of Batesville, Ind., Michael V. Current of Crescent Springs, David J. Current and Newton J. Current, both of Florence; a daughter, Maria Wilhelm of Aurora, Ind.; a brother, Paul Robertson of California; and seven grandchildren.

Esther E. Weldon, 81, of Warsaw, died Sunday at Villaspring Care Center, Erlanger. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Robert Weldon, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Shirley Pyles of Houston and Patricia Mae Cottrell of Warsaw; brothers, Ed House of Erlanger and Leslie House Jr. of Alexandria; three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Ireta Janet Willis, 78, of Fort Thomas, died Wednesday at Carmel Manor Nursing Home, Fort Thomas. She was a retired claims adjuster with Thomas E. Wood Insurance Co. and a member of Bellevue Seniors and St. Anthony Altar Society. Her husband, Earl Willis Sr., preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Terri Gabis of Owensboro and Nancy Sampson of Dayton; a son, Earl Willis Jr. of California; a sister, Margie Williams of Fort Thomas; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
