Katherine Wainscott Boss only had a sixth- or seventh-grade education, but she had the business smarts to run two bars in Covington in the 1950s and 1960s.
Mrs. Boss owned 222 Bar at 222 Pike St., and 845 Bar at 845 Banklick St., which were family-friendly establishments that served food and allowed kids to enter with their parents.
"She was always there, " her grandson, Rod Barker of Florence, said. "Sometimes she would tend bar."
Mrs. Boss, 90, of Florence, died at 1:45 a.m. Wednesday at Woodcrest Manor, Elsmere.
Barker remembers his parents, who both tended bar, taking him to his grandmother's bars on weekends.
He'd play pinball for hours and sleep on a cot in the back room.
The establishments were family-run affairs.
Barker said his grandmother was a 5-foot-1-inch, "feisty little redhead" who had a lot of friends but outlived most of them.
"It was an outgoing personality once you got to know her, " he said.
He also described his grandmother as being fiercely independent, living alone until she fell ill in June.
Barker said he and his grandmother became close after his parents died and she needed someone to help her run errands.
"She was kind of like my second mother really, " he said.
She enjoyed fishing at local pay lakes, especially at Thorn Hill Fishing Lake in southern Kenton County.
She also liked traveling to Florida, Mexico and Texas for summer vacations.
A daughter, Melrose J. Barker, died in 1989.
Survivors include a grandson, Rod D. Barker of Florence; nieces and nephews.
Services will be at noon today at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill.
Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Memorials are suggested to local animal shelters.
Herbert Lee Arthur, 72, of Huntington, W.Va., formerly of Covington, died Thursday at Cabell Hospital in Huntington.
He was a brick mason and an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include sons, Coy Lee Arthur, Gary Arthur, David Arthur and Clarence Arthur; and three grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at Reger Funeral Home, Huntington, W.Va.
Robert L. Callahan, 86, of Taylor Mill, died at 11:37 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.
He was a retired letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service, a member of the St. Anthony Fun Club with St. Anthony Church in Taylor Mill, and a member of the Postal Carriers Union.
He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Bernadette Mack Callahan; a son, James Thomas Callahan of Burlington; daughters, Patricia Ann Pelley of Burlington and Cynthia Jean Bramlage of Fort Wright; a sister, Alice Callahan of Clearwater, Fla.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Cross Church, Latonia.
Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Mr. Callahan bequeathed his body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

Russell Case, 72, of Park Hills, died at 3 a.m. Thursday at Villaspring Care Center, Erlanger.
He was a retired printer with Court Index Press and an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Case; a son, Arthur Case of Erlanger; daughters, Ruslyn Case-Compton of Salt Lick, Susan Hughes of Hebron, Elizabeth Case of Indianapolis and Deborah Case of Cincinnati; sisters, Thelma Marshall of Muncie, Ind., Gay Adams of Cobb Hill and Aggie Fahlbush of Newport; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Elsmere.
Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Monday.
Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Steven Herald, 45, of Newport, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

Jessie Joy Mitts, 87, of Dry Ridge, died Wednesday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati.
She was a registered nurse with Owen County Memorial Hospital, Owenton, and a member of the Grant County Women's Club and Carlsbad Garden Club.
She was a hospice volunteer and was named the 1999 Grant County Citizen of the Year.
Survivors include her husband, Donald Blain Mitts; sons, Dr. Donald L. Mitts of Cincinnati and Robert A. Mitts of Beechwood; daughters, Janice Thomas of St. Louis and Rosemary Culbertson of Georgetown; a sister, Elizabeth Marshall of Lakeworth, Fla.; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Williamstown United Methodist Church.

Wilma C. New, 84, of Lancaster, died Wednesday at Danville Rehabilitation Center, Danville.
She was a homemaker, a store clerk with Horn Drug Store in Frankfort and a member of Perry Park Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Earl New of Lancaster; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at McDonald and New Funeral Home, Seminary Street location, Owenton.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Squiresville Cemetery.
