William Hub, architect of more than buildings
William Hub was an architect of both buildings and friendships.
Even though they graduated from St. Xavier High just one year apart, Hub and David Dorn didn't really get to know each other until the late 1960s, developing a friendship and business relationship that blossomed through the years.
There's was a friendship fueled by golf.
"We played any place, " Dorn said Tuesday, a day after Hub died at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.
He was 63.
"It was always better than work. If you really had a bad day, you could lose $6 or $8 (to the other)."
Hub, St. X Class of '59 and a University of Cincinnati graduate with a degree in Architecture, was a noted Covington architect.
He started his own firm and later teamed with Gene Weber to form Hub and Weber architects on Greenup Street. Hub's first office was above a Pike Street paint store.
"Bill was a good father, good businessman. We had some mutual investments together, " said Dorn, owner of Dorn Sprinkler Co. of Cincinnati's Columbia-Tusculum neighborhood and a member of the St. X Class of '58.
"He's most probably my best friend. He was a lot of fun to spend time with."
Walt Nuckols also was a business partner of Hub's who became a valued friend.
Over the last 28 years, Nuckols' Post Browning company teamed with the architectural firm -- even though they are completely independent companies -- to create hundreds of examples of their work.
"We've probably done over 250 projects together. It's probably way more than that, all with the banking and financial industry, " Nuckols said.
That partnership, though, also extended into their personal lives.
Nuckols golfed, played tennis and socialized with Hub.
"Bill was very well connected in the business community, but he also was socially connected. Those business connections often became very good friends, " Nuckols said
Hub was a registered architect in six states.
His architectural firm has been involved in thousands of projects, including for more than 100 movie theaters in Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana. It also has designed senior citizen housing complexes, office and manufacturing facilities and more than a dozen car dealerships in Northern Kentucky.
Hub was a board member and founding partner of SouthBank Partners and past chairman of the Marge Schott Unnewehr Boys/Girls Club of Northern Kentucky.
