Ward Chumley, machine operator, owner of bars
Ward Chumley was the good-natured owner of popular bars in Covington, Independence and Cincinnati.
"He made a lot of friends and looked out for a lot of people, " said Mr. Chumley's son, Jeff Chumley of Elsmere.
Mr. Chumley, 90, of Elsmere, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth North Hospice in Covington.
He owned Dot's and Ward's Bar in Covington for 27 years, and before that owned Chumley's Place in Independence and Chum's Place in Cincinnati.
Mr. Chumley worked 33 years as a machine operator at Calton Machine Tool Co.
He was a member of the Good Guys Club and Hobos Club.
Mr. Chumley was a coal miner during the 1930s and moved from Tennessee to the Cincinnati area in 1938.
"He was one of a kind because he was so caring and giving and just touched everyone's life in his own way, " said Jeff Chumley. "He always had friends around him.
"He liked to joke a lot and was outgoing, just a people person. He was one heck of a man. He liked to hunt and fish and enjoyed just being an all-around jokester. He was a loving friend and a loving family man."
Other survivors include daughters, Margaret Whalen of Independence and Debbie Collins of Crittenden; a son, Phillip Chumley of Elsmere; a sister, Vivian Reynolds of LaFollette, Tenn.; brothers, J.C. Chumley of Halls, Tenn., and Shelby Chumley of Tazewell, Tenn.; 20 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home in Covington. Visitation will be from 4 to 6:45 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at IOOF cemetery in Napoleon.
Ilse M. Baker, 74, of Crestview Hills, died at 8:15 a.m. Saturday at her home. She was a retired secretary with Sears in Florence and a member of St. Stephen Episcopal Church, Covington. Her husband, Lewis Baker, died in 1996.
Survivors include a son, Bob Baker of Carrollton; daughters, Carol Grober of Edgewood and Rosalie Manning of Woodstock, Ga.; a brother, Franz Schweiger of Munich, Germany; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Highland cemetery Chapel, Fort Mitchell. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Ronald G. Brown, 61, of Highland Heights, died Friday at his home. He was a retired employee of the Cincinnati Enquirer. His wife, Mary Brown, preceded him in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Kimberly Brown of Columbus, Ohio; sons, Mark Brown of Cincinnati and Tony Brown of Columbus; his mother, Juanita Zimmerman of Daytona Beach, Fla.; brothers, Harry Brown of Portland, Ore., Jeff Zimmerman of Madison, Ind., and Pete Brown of Cincinnati; sisters, Pat Kiovsky of the state of Wyoming, Marilyn Kenecht of Fort Thomas and Kate Marmer of Morrow, Ohio; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at A.C. Dobbling and Son Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Wednesday. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Gerald D. "Jerry" Ellison, 66, of Atlanta, Ga., formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Oct. 16 in Atlanta.
Survivors include a son, John Ellison of Atlanta, Ga.; his mother, Edith Doll of Latonia; brothers, Gilbert Godby of Fairfield, Ohio, and Richard Godby of Copley, Ohio; sister, Rita Hodke of Latonia; an aunt, Lula Stout of Latonia; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. A half-hour visitation will precede the service. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth.
Laura Marie Farmer, 45, of Hamilton, Ohio, formerly of Covington, died Wednesday at Jewish Hospital. She was a factory worker at Standard Textiles, Cincinnati.
Survivors include a son, Jammie Mullins of Fort Mitchell; a daughter, Desirae Hertel of Cincinnati; her father, Ivy Mullins of Pippa Passes; sisters, Sharon Jent, Maxine Born, and Denise Sloane, all of Hindman; and two grandchildren.
Services were this morning at Swindler & Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Burial was in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
Louis W. Holman, 38, of Maysville, died Friday at University Medical Center, Lexington. He was a facilities technician with Mitsubishi, Maysville.
Survivors include his parents, Patricia Beckett Holman of Maysville and George L. Holman of Woodford County; and a sister, April Holman Miller of Denton.

Harlan Iles, 71, of Covington, died at 5:45 a.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was a retired, self-employed bricklayer.
Survivors include his wife, Bertie Webb Iles; sons, Jerry Lee Iles and Raymond Allen, both of Latonia, Tommy Masey of Taylor Mill, Larry White of Georgia and Ronny Allen of Whitley City; daughters, Joan Phillips of Latonia, Phyllis Bennett of Edgewood, Darla Sandlin of Jackson, Gladys Cooper of Independence, Tonya Allen and Melissa Burkett, both of Covington; brothers, Charles Iles of Independence, Robert Iles and Jerry Iles, both of Latonia, and Harry Iles of Covington; sisters, Lucy Clark of Newport and Betty Casey of Independence; 32 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Connie Johnson, 46, of Grants Lick, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.

Helen D. Jones, 53, of Independence, died Saturday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Beaver Lick Baptist Church, Union.
Survivors include her husband, Harvey Jones; sons, Robert Deusenberry of Hyden and James Jones of Independence; daughters, Raelynn Freeman of Dry Ridge and Kathy Facer of Independence; her mother, Myrtle Wooten Collins of Florence; brothers, Carlo Collins of Okeechobee, Fla., John Wilder of Florence and Jackson Collins of Hyden; sisters, Joyce Woodall of Florence and Carolyn Hyde of Dry Ridge; seven stepchildren, 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Byron P. "Buck" Lile, 93, of Taylor Mill, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired salesman with Economy Drug Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church, Covington. He taught Sunday school and was an usher at the church, and was an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Naomi Obel Lile, died in 1997.
Survivors include a son, Byron Ray Lile of Taylor Mill.

George J. McHugh, 80, of Erlanger, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired maintenance supervisor with Dider A. Taylor Co., Newtown, Ohio.
Survivors include his wife, Juanita McHugh; a son, George E. McHugh of Elsmere; a grandson and two great-grandchildren.

Carl A. Muething, 85, of Cincinnati, formerly of Covington, died at 11:45 a.m. Friday at Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a retired stockbroker with Gradison and Co., Cincinnati, and an Army veteran. A son, Charles J. Muething, preceded him in death.
Survivors include sons, Marc P. Muething of Silver Springs, Md., and Eric R. Muething of Cincinnati; a daughter, Sheryl L. Muething of Cincinnati; a brother, Richard Muething of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a grandchild and three great-grandchildren.

Harlan "Chico" Neace, 52, of Newport, died at 9:55 p.m. Friday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a mailer with S. Rosenthal Printing Co., Cincinnati. His brother, Matt Neace, died Saturday.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy Jones Neace; brothers, Robert Neace and James Neace, both of Newport, Rodney Neace of Portsmouth, Ohio, Willard Neace of Hebron and Jack Neace of Wilder; and sisters, Juanita Jackson of Covington, Bobbi Jean Russ of Alexandria and Libby Jones of Newport.

Matt Neace, 68, of Southgate, died at 12:40 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a stock person with the former Shineshimers Clothing Manufacturing Co. and an employee of Cincinnati Metal Co. His brother, Harlan Neace, died Friday.

Gary R. Peebles, 62, of Union, died Sunday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a retired data systems analyst with AT&T; and a former administrator with IBM, a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Independence and a Navy veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Cheryl Osterbrook Peebles; a son, Leslie Travis Peebles of Norwood, Ohio; daughters, Julie Lynn Freimuth and Tina Rae Peebles, both of Independence; stepdaughters, Christina Lynn Boutwell of Independence and Michelle Leigh Boutwell of Union; his parents, Leslie Gordon and Hazel Conner Peebles of Independence; a brother, Richard Allen Peebles of Independence; and three grandchildren.

Albert W. Rose, 86, of Fort Mitchell, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a retired bartender with Colony Restaurant.
Survivors include his wife, Paulann Rose; sons, Albert G. Rose and Joe Rose, both of Cincinnati; a daughter, Darlene Broxterman of Cincinnati; a stepson, Woody Phelps of Cincinnati; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Terry Ray Williams, 59, of Visalia, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was greens keeper at the former Beechland Golf Course in Boone County, a member of Fort Mitchell Baptist Church and an Vietnam War veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Claudia Williams; a son, Terry Williams II, of Visalia; daughters, Melissa Arrowood, Robin Williams, Shelley Williams, and Tina Williams, all of Erlanger; his mother, Elsie Williams of Walton; brothers, Ronald E.
