Pauline Daly, hairdresser, organ donor
Pauline Daly, a beloved Covington hairdresser who worked for 40 years at a funeral home, was such a giver in life that when she died, there was only one thing left to do.
Keep giving.
Ms. Daly, who died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood at age 69, insisted on being an organ donor, for years proudly showing the designation on her driver's license.
"She gave to the very end, " said her daughter, Andrea Parnell Staggs of Taylor Mill. "And she's still giving."
Ms. Daly's corneas were harvested for transplant, as were parts of her inner ear.
"Somebody who's never even heard a bird's chirp will now be able to, " her daughter said. "My mom would be so proud of that."
That belief in giving was instilled in her during her four decades at Allison & Rose Funeral Home in Taylor Mill, a job she initially took because a longtime customer of her hairdressing business had died, and the family requested Ms. Daly for funeral preparations.
Then a second request came. And a third. Soon, she got past the uneasiness of the work with her trademark sense of humor.
"We'd say, 'Why are you going to go back?'" Staggs said, "and she'd say, "It's good money and the customers never complain, never talk back, they just let me do my thing."
Staggs said the hardest part of the job was when her mother had to put a ponytail on a small child.
Ms. Daly grew up an only child. From that experience, she became a devoted friend to many in Covington.
Many neighbors came to her home for hairdressing appointments and left with an afghan or baby booties, which Daly crocheted herself.
"Everyone in the community got a crochet from her, every child, every grand-child, " Staggs said.
Ms. Daly lived her entire life in Covington, graduating from Holmes High School in 1952. Two years later, she married
Charles Parnell. They had three kids, got divorced, then a decade later remarried and had two more children. Then, they divorced again. Many years later, she married
Gene Daly, who preceded her in death in 1999.
Ms. Daly also worked at Lazarus and Shillito's, retiring from Lazarus in the 1996 after 15 years as an account clerk.
She continued to work for Allison & Rose, however, dressing the hair for her last customer just a week before she went into the hospital, suffering from cancer. She never got out.
She enjoyed traveling, the racetracks and casinos, and also was an active member of Moose Lodge No. 1469 in Taylor Mill and the Rosie Reds, a women's fan club.
She typically wore red during the Cincinnati Reds season. This created something of a problem when the season overlapped with the University of Kentucky basketball team, for whom she always wore blue.
"She could talk UK basketball with the best of 'em, " Staggs said.
Other survivors include daughters Toni Parnell Rise of Covington and Paula Renee Parnell of Bridgetown, Ohio; sons, Barry Delman Parnell of Taylor Mill and Troy G. Parnell of Walton; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
