'Deana' Chandler, 73, Owen County jailer
Just about everyone in Owen County knew "Deana" Chandler.
"All you had to say was 'Deana, ' and everybody knew who you meant, " said Mrs. Chandler's daughter-in-law, Theresa Chandler of Owenton.
"She was really well known throughout the county and really well liked."
Nadine "Deana" Chandler, 73, of Owenton, died Saturday at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington following a brief illness.
She was elected and re-elected several times as Owen County jailer, serving in that position a total of 24 years.
If someone had to go to jail, it was best to go to "Deana's jail, " said her daughter-in-law.
"She didn't treat her prisoners as prisoners, " she said. "She treated them like they were family.
"She cooked for them and fed them three good meals a day. She was a people person and treated her prisoners right."
Before becoming jailer, Mrs. Chandler operated her own restaurant, Deana's Diner.
Mrs. Chandler's hobby was going to yard sales.
"She just loved yard sales, " said her daughter-in-law.
Mrs. Chandler had an outgoing personality and enjoyed chatting with people.
"She was well spoken, " said her daughter-in-law.
"She told you like it was. Either you liked what she said or you didn't."
Mrs. Chandler was a member of Owenton First Methodist Church and a past president of the Owenton VFW Women's Auxiliary.
Other survivors include a daughter, Kimberly Chandler Goodrich of Owenton; sons, Louis Dean and Charlie Chandler, both of Owenton; a sister, Henritta Cheek of Cold Spring; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at McDonald & New Funeral Home, 248 W. Seminary St., in Owenton.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Burial will be in IOOF cemetery in Owenton.
Marie O. Ahlers, 69, of Warsaw, died Saturday at her home. Her husband, James Allen Ahlers, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Henry Ahlers of Oppaka, Fla., Steve Ahlers of Sparta, Douglas Ahlers of Batavia, Ohio, and Leo J. Ahlers of Warsaw; a daughter, Sharon Marie Fightmaster of Covington; brothers, Larry Lindon of Covington and Virgil Lindon of Warsaw; a sister, Vivian Lindon of Warsaw; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 7 tonight at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Mansfield, Ohio, Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Northern Kentucky, 1403 Alexandria Pike, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075.
Elaine Patricia Barker, of Covington, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.

Mary Julia Pahls Bitter, 83, of Villa Hills, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
She was a factory worker with Serve-All Foods in Covington and a member of St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs. She was a member of the St. Anne Sodality, the Grandmothers Association and Happy Timers, and was a volunteer with several charities.
Survivors include sons, Roy Bitter of Edgewood, Ron Bitter of Florence and Sam Bitter of Villa Hills; daughters, Marie Judd of Villa Hills and Angela "Darla" Singleton of Crittenden; sisters, Dorothy Herzog of Virginia and Martha Meyer of Florence; 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Gerald D. Ellison, 66, of Atlanta, died Sunday in Atlanta.

Karen Fields, 49, of Florence, died Thursday at her residence. She was employed at the Discovery Channel Store.
Survivors include a daughter, Brandi Fields of Florence; a brother, Ronnie Hitch of Lenoxburg; and sisters, Carol Faulkner of Florence and Kay King of Berry.

Bobby Lee Grimm, 17, of Cynthiana, died Sunday at Harrison Memorial Hospital, Cynthiana.
Survivors include his parents, Pete and Brenda Hill Grimm of Cynthiana; a brother, Chris Grimm, at home; and grandmother, Annalesa Smith of Randallstown, Md.

Jewel Irene Hicks, 72, of Taylor Mill, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
She was a retired employee of Sweco Inc., a former employee of Drackett Co. and a member of First Will Baptist Church, Covington.
Survivors include her husband, Stanley Hicks; sons, Wayne Hicks, Dennis Hicks, Daryl Hicks, Greg "Red Dog" Hicks and Randy Hicks, all of Independence; a daughter, Teresa Hicks of Independence; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence.

Kenneth M. Holbrook, 90, of Crittenden, died at 8 p.m. Saturday at his home.
He was a retired employee of F.H. Lawson Co., Cincinnati, a member of Sherman Baptist Church in Dry Ridge and a Sunday school teacher at the church.
He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Eva Marie Carter Holbrook; a son, Kenny L. Holbrook of Florence; a daughter, Phyllis C. Weber of Walton; a brother, Emmett Overton Holbrook of Crittenden; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Alexander Hyrcza, 75, of Florence, died Wednesday at his home.
He was an employee of Syracuse, N.Y., Lithographing Co., a member of St. Henry Church and an Air Force veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Maryetta Randall Hyrcza; a daughter, Jennifer Pitt of Cincinnati; a son, Alex Hyrcza of Gertrude; a brother, George Hyrcza of Front Royal, Va.; sisters, Rose Matysiak of Florence, and Anna Wysochanski and Alice Gillen, both of Syracuse; and five grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial was Saturday at St. Augustine Church, Augusta.
Burial was in Mount Zion Cemetery, Augusta.

Esther B. Bloemer Kleman, 97, of Fort Wright, died at 1:03 p.m. Friday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington.
She was a bookkeeper with Donaldson Art Sign and a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell.
Her husband, Mark Kleman, died in 1984.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Charles Care Center Chapel, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.

Robert Meyer, 78, of Edgewood, died at 1 a.m. Saturday at University Hospital, Cincinnati.
He was a retired pipe fitter with Pipefitters Union Local No. 392, Cincinnati, a member of Kelly Furnish VFW Post No. 7099, Covington, and a Navy veteran of World War II.
His wife, Eleanora Houp Meyer, died in 2001.
Survivors include sons, Thomas E. Meyer of Edgewood and William J. "Jim" Meyer of Villa Hills; a brother, Louis E. Meyer of Covington; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Mildred Irene Merrill Moore, 77, of Covington, died at 6:22 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Covington Fraternal Order of Police.
Survivors include her husband, Urvin V. Moore; a son, Alvin Ray Snedicor of Dry ridge; a daughter, Janet Louise Thacker of Covington; grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.

Ralph Earl Moore, 76, of Robertson County, died Saturday at Nicholas County Hospital, Carlisle.
He was a retired farmer, owner of Moore's Sanitation Pickup and a former county magistrate.
Survivors include his wife, Ocea Mae Wallingford Moore; sons, Anthony T. Moore, David E. Moore, Darrell W. Moore and Danny Lee Moore, all of Robertson County; brothers, Bill Moore of Lexington and Frank Moore of Robertson County; a sister, Judy Mullikin of Robertson County; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Robertson County Funeral Home, Mount Olivet.

Clifford Earl Randall, 80, of Cincinnati, formerly of Covington, died at 3:37 p.m. Friday at Mercy Franciscan Hospital, Mount Airy campus, Cincinnati.
He was the retired owner of Tri-City Home Service Co., Cincinnati, and a member of the Mount Healthy American Legion Post and Independent Order of Foresters.
Survivors include his wife, Jacqueline Sensel Corner Randall; a daughter, Betty Lee Ehling of Crittenden; stepdaughters, Brenda Elliott of Villa Hills, Dawna Haupt of Cold Spring and Lisa Morgan of Batavia, Ohio; stepsons, Greg Corner of Moores Hill, Ind., and Ty Corner of Cincinnati; a sister, Betty Elliott of Florence; brothers, Henry Randall of Independence and Floyd Randall of Crescent Springs; 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Wednesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport.
Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
