Richard Birkenhauer Sr., had many friends
Growing up in Newport, Richard Birkenhauer Sr. learned early on to be tough. He wasn't afraid to mix it up. But he also had a soft heart.
One of his three sons, Thomas Birkenhauer of Fort Thomas, described him this way:
"He was tough as nails, but he had a heart of gold. He was a guy who had a lot of friends everywhere -- either you liked him or you didn't. There was no middle ground with him."
Mr. Birkenhauer died Thursday night at his home in Newport. He was 79.
He never made it past the eighth grade, but he had a head for numbers. As a delivery man and salesman for 48 years for Wiedemann Brewing, he learned to tally up long lists of figures quickly.
"He could add in his head faster than most people could on a calculator and never make a mistake, " his son said.
He also had a way with a joke.
"Dad was a character. He loved to tell a joke. And if it got a laugh, he'd tell it two or three times to the same people. He'd put a little more into it each time, and get a bigger laugh each time."
An avid outdoorsman, he hunted and fished from the time he was a boy.
"He was out last rabbit season, last deer season, and he fished all spring and a big part of the summer, " his son said.
"If he wasn't doing something, he was sleeping. He wasn't the type to just sit."
